If the kid already had the tray, what's the point of confiscating it and dumping it all in the trashbin?
Tomorrow, however, that kid better have that ten bucks, or I guess twelve and some change now, or he's going directly to the cheese sandwich line.

Teach him early. Even better. You guys want to coddle children way too much, and you wonder why they can't make smart financial decisions about college when they turn 18?

I grew up poor. I missed lunch all the time. Often had to eat old, moldy food (ripped off the mold). Getting a McDonald's Happy Meal was considered a fucking treat. And you know how much college debt I ended up with? Zero. I was literally collecting coins since the first grade because I knew how valuable money was. Don't underestimate what kids are capable of.

they did slap him in the face: he had the item on his tray and in front of his peers it was taken away by the cafeteria staff, thrown in the garbage, and the cheese sandwich substituted

punishing children for the mistakes of their parents--with an ultra-tight threshold for error--is stupid, brutish, and encourages children to feel uneasy about school in general.

your ideas about childhood learning are inconsistent with current research into child psychology.

maybe we're being told that so we're more inclined to tolerate it when people are mistreated

Then why would anyone ever pay the balance?

Presumably because they believe they should, but also, wording: For the day, not indefinitely. Though that is vague enough that I could be wrong.

How do you ring up a $10 balance in a school cafeteria in one day?

yeah that doesnt really seem like an either or situation

adults capable of empathy don't punish children (or approve of the punishment of children) for the mistakes of other adults

not paying the balance would be tantamount to that since it might yield the kid being unable to get lunch again

i guess it might seem like one if you have antisocial personality disorder

Where was it stated by officials or the kid that they threw it in the trash? The only person saying that was the grandmother and I'm pretty sure she doesn't go to elementary school. This is what the kid said

When I was going to check out, the lunch lady didnt say anything, took away my cheesy breadsticks and sauce, put them over there, and took out bread on cheese from the fridge and put it on my tray,

You literally just made all that conjecture up in your first sentence. He was in line, they took the food back from him in line, and gave him different food. He isnt responsible, but that doesn't make him deserving of special food that is suppose to be paid for. And again, nowhere in this article or anywhere that I have read has an official or the kid stating that the food was thrown out.

There's nothing to dance about. You made a statement that you couldn't back up. You have no idea what they did with the food. The lunch lady might have ate it, it might have been donated to a homeless shelter, or maybe the kid never even touched the tray, and it was re-served, because this all happened while he was still in the food line.
