There's this guy who comes in every now and again for a pint of something, usually captain morgan.

Now, some backstory I've heard from my GM: this guy was in a serious ATV accident and almost died, but was saved but he talks and acts like he is drunk. slurred speech, can't understand him, kinda loopy, etc. because the accident fucked him up. So, yeah, if you didnt know the backstory you'd just assume he was under the influence. When he talks you can really only understand a quarter of the words in any given sentence so you mainly just nod and agree, which is good enough. But yeah he always sounds like he's got a case of beer in his stomach.

So, i'm waiting on him, and the manager in charge is somebody new and doesn't quite know all the characters in this area. I take his money and am about the make the sale, all the while he is going on and on about whatever in his usual highly slurred voice, when the newer manager(only one on) comes over and says he isn't being served because of his slurred speech. I tell him I have to agree with the manager in charge, so I deny him as well. He rants for a minute saying stuff like "who the fuck are you" (about her) and whatever else, but again, I can't over ride my managers decision, so I hand him back his money. I was told in training that if I deny the sale, the manager is supposed to back me up, so i applied the reverse. She made the call, as she is allowed to do(even though I was serving), and I backed her up even if she might have been wrong. This guy does drink frequently , so he might have actually have been drunk today, but I don't know. I don't have the best sense of smell, so I didnt smell anything. Again, though, if you didn't know the mans backstory you'd likely assume he's had more than a few. We're supposed to look for more than one cue and he displayed several(slurred speech and that kind of talk to anybody and everybody about random shit thing people do when drunk...but people also have this personality by default)

In a way I feel conflicted. Should I have said something? If this guy wants to complain to the powers at "corporate" level(gov't owned) I feel he has an actual cause for complaint and there being some action against the manager on duty.

Oh well, regardless of what happens, this man said something about a year ago that has always stuck with me. In his usual slurred voice, while buying a pint of Captain: "Imma just need this to get me through a grass cutting"

So you didn't tell your new manager that the guy is a regular customer and that's how he is? You certainly should have informed her. I don't understand why you wouldn't. This isn't the managers fault for not knowing.

i feel conflicted about my decision to not inform her. though in the moment I didn't want to bring up anything about this guy and his medical issues. But in all honesty I feel like perhaps I should have told her to back off(politely), let me serve him and explain later.

I don't know. I don't think I acted in the best way thinking back but oh well.

he walks funny, too. not like he can't walk, but he is a dead ringer for the monty python funny dance walk thing or whatever

I did tell the manager after the fact about his medical condition, though she didn't seem fazed in the sense she stood by her decision based on the information she had at the time she denied.

Though something i've been thinking of. I've been told of his ATV accident by my GM, but I don't know if thats true. That's something I "shouldn't" know. I am not asking this man about any health issues or bringing it up around him, but the customer in question has never told me about an ATV accident, so while I trust the source, and an ATV accident could easily cause a neuro disorder(no idea what term i should be using), i've never confirmed it.

Neither he nor his manager have any evidence that he was under the influence. If TC was concerned that his manager detected something he didn't (smell) he should have asked his manager. Instead he didn't say anything at all.

Liquor regulations don't typically require hard evidence to refuse sales. If you suspect that somebody's had too much to drink, regardless of the reason, you're not supposed to serve them more. There's no penalty for refusing to serve somebody who's actually alright (unless your reason for refusing ties into some other protected trait, like refusing on the basis of race), while there are penalties for serving somebody who isn't (provided there was reasonable cause to suspect that), so it's usually better to err on the side of caution if you want to avoid legal issues.

TC did the right thing because it was his managers call. Since hes an employee, you cant go undermining your manager/boss unless you want to get fired or on their bad side. Personally I would have sold it to him knowing his background, but if my boss said no, I wouldnt.

My point was not serving someone because they have had too much to drink is like not serving obese people food because they have had too much already. It was just banta and now you've sucked the fun out of it as you always do.
