This can be retirement accounts, bank checking/savings, etc.

I have roughly $8,000 in savings and about $75,000 in a retirement account. I also have some stock worth about $20,000 or so. I am not a stock person so.

I see your point but I read an article that the average American doesn't have $400 in an emergency fund so I was curious. But nobody has to answer if it makes them uncomfortable and no it was not about bragging either.

Thats probably true. I read somewhere that 78% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. So, they probably dont have a lot in their savings, if anything. For the other 22%, it wouldnt surprise me if many didnt have anything, or much, in their savings account...

Hey, that's a start! Don't understimate the compounding of your savings over time, as money you put in early career can grow substantially. If I average the amount of retirement savings for my wife and I combined it comes to around $34K per year, but we haven't put in nearly that much every year since we started saving. Employer match on the 401k helps a lot too, make sure you're getting the maximum match!

I have exactly 420 right now, and within a month's time that'll be back down to 0 (I've been scraping & saving for Dublin Worldcon, but have just had my local authority basically hit me in the face with a bill for 8,000+ for home care - & not only inaccurately billed care, care I haven't even been regularly getting, if you can believe that. Every time the agency meant to deliver my home care cancel a call on me, they still get paid...).

Health care, yes. Social care (as in support at home if you're disabled & struggle without help)? Not so much.

I had a bunch of money in the markets up until a couple of weeks ago.

Then you didn't drop your savings, but rather your investments.

Its not always that they are irresponsible with money. Sometimes, its about how much they make. If they barely make more a month than they use, then they cant really save anything. Which is probably what happens since nearly 80% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.

Then you have other things like emergencies for all sorts of things. Whether it car repairs, house repairs, or payments for something that seems to have come out of nowhere...

"Average American" includes people on the dole, so the numbers are greatly distorted. Plus people on an internet forum will most likely be more affluent than the average person (or, at the very least, skews higher than the general norm)

As for people on the net being better off than the norm... not anybody I know of...!

As for having internet access? It may not be a "thing" in the States, but here in the UK, our public libraries have computers & provide a certain degree of internet access for free (usually one free hour with the option to pay for a second, though my own local library don't charge for the second hour either). I know a number of homeless people or people with otherwise insecure or severely impoverished living situations who spend a lot of time in the library I normally use sometimes to save having to use utilities at home, sometimes just to stay indoors. So it's wrong to assume internet access makes somebody rich. By worldwide standards? Maybe. But within their own societies? No.

You have to pay for extra internet time at the library? Maybe its because I havent been to one in a long time, but I dont ever remember paying to use the internet...
