Yeah, that was my biggest problem with the 2014 one. I like human plots in kaiju films, but goddamn.

It's true though. The best stories are about people. Even when you have things like dinosaurs, zombies, or aliens, the best stories are the ones which put the focus on how the people react to them.

This is the attitude that ruins Transformers for me. I don't care about Shia "The Beef" or his human girlfriend problems. Inhuman characters can carry a movie entirely on their own, but writers keep insisting on adding human characters, giving them the vast majority of screen time, then saying "the audience relates to this person more than they would relate to a giant robot."

To that I say "fuck off mate, a Godzilla movie is best when Godzilla is in charge."

If youre fine with some incredibly stupid people playing second fiddle to glorious kaiju moments, King of the Monsters will provide one of the best popcorn blockbusters of the summer.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a big, kinda silly, but otherwise exciting blockbuster. Its gorgeous, its epic in the extreme, and it features some of the most impressive monster fights youve ever seen.

Globe-trotting, action-packed

these quotes from reviewers pretty much says what this Godzilla film needed, actually plot with Humans to keep it interesting and grounded in reality instead of 2 hours of cgi monster fighting

Movie sounds great per these reviews.

What American movies havent learned about giant monsters is that the human story needs synergy with the monster story, and the monsters need to be, ultimately, the main event, not a flashy action climax.

Just...go watch the original Japanese Gojira to figure out how its supposed to work lol

I don't disagree with Transformers, but those characters are functionally human.

Transformers is about robots, but it's really about war and the individuals who fight that war. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is about turtles, but it's really about brotherhood. Lion King is about lions, but it's really about monarchical rule and personal responsibility. Watership Down is about rabbits, but is really about a community having to relocate.

All of these stories feature nonhuman protagonists, but still have anthropomorphism at its core. They're still functionally human even if the stories are crafted in such a manner to remind us that they're not. The most anthropomorphism that Godzilla has had is in striking victory poses, cursing, or telling Anguirus to check out the mainland.

I'm fine with Godzilla getting into 20 minute wrestling matches, but that's not going to reach the same audience as a film which has human characters reacting to Godzilla as though he were a natural disaster or some strange anomaly of life.

But there's another audience like me that doesn't care about humans reacting and wants to see nothing but monsters beating the shit out of each other. I wouldn't pay for another 2014, I'm definitely going to see this. But you're right that the critic audience doesn't like that kind of thing.

It's not about critics. It's about mainstream audiences. The time to say screw everyone else and to make the movie you want is when you know it's the last film in the series. That's when you have nothing to lose. When you're trying to build a franchise, you have to meet audience expectations.

I'd enjoy an hour long brawl pitting Godzilla, Rodan, and Jet Jaguar against Gigan, Hedorah, and Space Godzilla. But that film wouldn't make money in the States.

So Jurassic Park shouldve just been about dinosaurs fighting each other for 2 hours?

Jaws shouldve just been a shark swimming around and just eating people for 90 minutes?

A disaster film like Godzilla that happens to take place of earth needs to have humans and their reaction to this disaster

how can the audience relate to just watching monsters destroying cities and wrestling with other monsters?

Well a Saturday morning cartoon for kids would love that

But Jurassic Park and Jaws are nothing like Godzilla. JP was a direct consequence of humanity playing God. Jaws was more of a horror movie. Godzilla needs humans to react to the destruction and set up plot points but it should never come at the sacrifice of Godzilla himself.

Nah I literally cant imagine a big Hollywood film where its just monsters fighting and destruction of cities

It may as well be a BBC history wildlife episode where we just watch these monsters live their life

Godzilla gets discovered by humans, and humans need to kill Godzilla or the other monster before it kills them

Godzilla is literally the personification of human conflict. Whether it be nuclear arms, Japanese war dead, or Japanese military autonomy in the modern age, Godzilla has functioned as the ramification of humans' actions.

Well, the Showa era distanced itself from that pretty quick to make Godzilla the hero, but the monster conflicts were still almost always a result of human conflict.

I don't think anyone is saying absolutely no humans, just less of them and more monsters. Yeah we get it, it's scary down below when giant ass monsters are fucking shit up. I'd be shitting my pants too. Who cares, lets just watch the carnage unfold. I'm not watching Godzilla movies for deep metaphorical thought, all I need is a thin plot as an excuse for the next monster action.
