It's not about critics. It's about mainstream audiences. The time to say screw everyone else and to make the movie you want is when you know it's the last film in the series. That's when you have nothing to lose. When you're trying to build a franchise, you have to meet audience expectations.

I'd enjoy an hour long brawl pitting Godzilla, Rodan, and Jet Jaguar against Gigan, Hedorah, and Space Godzilla. But that film wouldn't make money in the States.
