I didn't have a job, I was learning. As everyone does from the age of 0 to 5 before they go into school. It's not like they don't already have a partial education by then. Unless the parents just left the child in a closet for no one to see without any sort of connection to the world.

But I don't know, maybe you did.

By that standard virtually nobody's a NEET as there's always more to learn in life.

It's almost like humans could do that, but instead they complain about their entire life rather than doing something about it.

Even people complaining are educating themselves on something, even if it's dark souls progression strategies or trolling mechanics.

Have you seen the people who proclaim themselve's NEETs?

That's not really relevant, as very few NEETs consider themselves NEETs as it's usually a stop gap in a normal person's life.

Not really but there was a period of several months following my college graduation where I was actively avoiding looking for a job or studying for graduate school entrance exams.
I even had former professors and employers questioning me why I decided to take those months off.

While that's not an incorrect statement, pre-school development is significantly more rapid than any everyday experiential learning that happens post-school, and pretty comparable to the volume of learning they get later in school. It's not formally education, no, but toddlers are learning enough every day that calling them NEETs doesn't really seem accurate. By contrast, an adult who isn't in school or working doesn't learn enough every day to really compare that to formal education, so "NEET" because a more accurate label.

Nah, longest period I have gone without employment/schooling in my teens/adult years was the 2 months I spent between my last job and my current. Even during that time I was spending 40 hours a week actively looking for a new job.

How do you spend 40 hours a week looking for a job? I'd try that, but I feel like that's not even possible. There are only so many new postings in a day and only so many that you can apply to. Were you just networking anybody and everybody at that time?

If there are not enough jobs you are qualified for that you can spend 40 hours a week looking for a job, then maybe the problem is you need to be qualified for more work in your area?

That's a weird sentence, I don't know what you're really trying to say. That I need better skills? I don't disagree with that, but I still don't think that would make it that there are 40 hours worth of jobs to look through each week. I've long been vocal about not just "playing the numbers" though. Applying to 100 jobs a week instead of (at this point) somewhere from 0 to 10 isn't going to change the fact that I have shitty experience, an employment gap, and suck at interviewing, or whatever else it is that makes nobody want to hire me. It might just mean I have a better chance of getting lucky enough that somebody ignores those issues, but it isn't going to fix what the real problem is.

I guess if you have your experienced lined up ideally and everything else is good, then yeah the shotgun approach might work, but it's not for me

I think this can depend entirely on the field. For instance, most education jobs will post at the end of a school year. You would only find work driving a snow plow in certain areas at certain times of the year.

But I generally agree with the sentiments. If you can't find many job postings for what you do in your area, it might be time to get some skills for those jobs that are available.
