My luck must be running out though. It can't last much longer...right? I just can't imagine having to watch what I eat. Not being able to eat fast food every day if I feel like it.

Same. I eat like shit and still haven't changed weights. I know the other shoe will eventually drop and I'll gain like a hundred pounds one weekend, but I'm enjoying the ride while I can!

Same. My parents said it'd catch up in my 20s but I have 4 years left.

It's fun to weigh myself Thanksgiving before dinner and then the next morning. I've always lost a couple pounds.

People that got fat were either lazy or eating too much for an extended period of time.

It's not complicated and unless you're super old it makes a marginal amount of difference what your age is in regards to metabolism.

No, it is more complicated. Some people just have huge metabolic disadvantages so what would normally constitute a reasonable diet for others makes them gain weight. I know skinny people who eat far worse and do less physical activity than overweight people I also know.

No, it's not. No-one cheats science.

If the amount of calories you consume on a regular basis exceeds the amount you regularly use through physical activity them you will gain weight.

The people who do not continually gain weight are either regularly consuming less calories, regularly burning more through activity or - ideally - a healthy balance of the two.

Fundamentally wrong. The law of thermodynamics and calories in - calories out is a simple concept and can never be broken.

The ease of attaining that energy balance through all the variables of individual metabolism is not simple. Some people have to work much, much harder to be in a caloric deficit than others.

Hey what would you recommend for weight gain for a skinny 125lb 5'6 dude? My peak was 135lb then I stopped but want to get back in shape. Basically what I'm looking for is weight gain, strength is not that important.

We're not because the core of the disagreement is whether it's as simple as eating too much or not. There's more context to the story beyond simple thermodynamics. People don't acknowledge how hard or complicated it can be on a practical basis to fulfill their numerical deficit due to individual variances of insulin resistance, metabolic rate, etc.

The reason people think their metabolism slows down when they get older is because they become less active. Food is just energy. Fat is just stored energy. Your body uses the necessary energy to maintain itself. Anything extra is kept for emergency use. If your body is storing more fat, it simply means you are using less energy. As we age, our bodies don't become more efficient and require less food. That is silly. We just use less energy because we are less active. People that maintain an active lifestyle as they age don't start gaining weight while eating the same amount that they always did.

I feel like you're making that difference seem a lot bigger than it is for average people. There are definitely outliers that really struggle with this kind of thing but for the majority of people, especially those on this board, it's the difference between eating a bagel with cream cheese for breakfast every day or two eggs.

Nah. There are a lot of overweight people and out of those there are many who eat less or are more active than people who weigh less than them. It doesn't mean you eschew hard work and admit that there's nothing you can do, but some people have to work a lot harder to achieve the same result and this is not anything uncommon or exceptional.

Both. It doesn't take much to be classified as overweight, really.

I can think of some downright fat people who work physically active jobs, do a fair amount of walking, and eat similarly to or better than their peers but are the weight they are because that's still not enough for them. This isn't every overweight person but it's not uncommon, either.
