The board supported Mario over Samus. There shouldn't be any backlash from that in Cloud's favor.

I think I'm coming around on the idea that banning Link from future contests might actually be a good idea.

Samus/Mario/Zelda/Cloud all seem to be on a similar level and could all possibly beat each other in the right circumstances. Mario is a good villain that represents a powerful final boss that is actually possible to beat.

I would prefer Series Contest 2 as the next mini contest. It would be possible to increase the number of entrants up to 64 game series while running the contest in under 1 month by doing multiple matches per day.

We've done this in many brackets, and each time in resulted in a better contest than if we hadn't. All these late game matches are 1/3 as exciting as they should be because the final winners spot isn't on the line.

We can just put Link in a bonus match if we wanna see what happen (spoiler alert : he wins)

We know Link wins. He's the most popular. It's established. It's over. He's #1. It's just a lot more fun for everyone fighting for #2 to not have to get taken out earlier by facing him. It's a wasted space.

The final battle can be just Link vs the winner. Just to show how far away Link is from everyone.

And this match is still not decided right now which is far more than any of Link's matches
When Link is involved, you can turn off your analysis, not even read the stats and pick him to win easily. You could find reasons for both Mario and Cloud to wins in that match.

Villains would be an even worse contest today than it was in 2005 because it just feels like the site doesn't seem to like villains as much as they used to (see Sephiroth getting weaker the past few years).

A Female character contest doesn't seem to be as terrible now because the site seems to be more comfortable with female characters in their video games. The history of this poll is very interesting:

Going back to the 2009 poll, there's a huge change in voters playing a custom made female character, which I take as a proxy for the site being more comfortable with female characters in lead roles in their video games.
