The first thing I was taught in my conceal carry class was that as soon as the threat is down or disarmed, you either holster your weapon or if police are on the scene, you immediately put it down because the cops can mistake you for the bad guy.

This is a natural evolution of the second amendment.

Let's take this to an extreme.

Everyone has a gun. The second amendment protects such rights.

A bad person with a gun starts to open fire in a crowded area. It causes a panic.

Assume 90% of people flee. The other 10% pull their fire arms and exchange shots with the bad guy.

Now police enter the scene with let's say over a dozen people with fire arms and exchanging fire. How in the fuck is a cop supposed to immediately know which person with a gun is a good samaritan and which is the shooter they are looking for?

They issue an order to someone who has a weapon. That person is amped up with adrenaline and does not hear immediately, or it doesnt register with them what to do. Police then must assume person who is in non compliance with a gun is a threat.

This world is fucking terrifying. I live in Canada and we got a lot of guns, but our laws about pistols and conceal carry and all that are different. You don't hear about active shooters and whatnot. I know it is not necessarily about gun laws, but let's take a look at how we can make the situation easier on police, on everyone.

i mean, i assume cops are given a description of the perp and of the situation. if they are trained with a gun and on how to use it safely to protect people, they should be able to adequately arrive at a shooting and make smart decisions on what to do and not just rush in blind and fire at the first person with a gun

That is assuming every single cop is not only especially well trained, but has no personal bias, is experienced in these situations, and doesnt make a mistake.

Ideally nobody ever makes a mistake in their job. As we have seen, especially when it comes to police, mistakes happen and often with deadly consequences.

It was a study involving officer involved shootings with black people and the figure actually showed that white cops shot black people less than any other race. As well as some other good statistics, it was from yesterday I wish I could find it.

The days of the 80s racist LA white cops isnt a thing. Yeah theres bad eggs but its not the norm. Ive seen one get fired for constantly making age jokes about another cop. Majority of these sensationalized shootings fall under graham v Connor, or a good use of force model. I would bet my life 100 times this cop from lack of communication and training saw the dude holding a gun and immediately shot. In the day of bodycam I really find it hard to believe he just came in there with the intention of shooting a black person lol

I posted a similar study that used the Washington Post database (the best database there currently is). It found that overall white officers were no more likely to shoot dead black suspects than white suspects. It also found that black cops were just as likely as white cops to shoot dead unarmed black suspects (but some caution should be exercised here, as the sample size is very small). You wouldn't know any of that from the left wing media's fixation on the race of the cop involved in this case, or other cases like it.

It also cited a prior study that found that ER treatment differed dramatically by race, resulting in significantly higher rates of mortality among black trauma patients -- a variable not controlled for in any of the studies on officer-involved shootings I have read. Some of the racial disparity in police shooting deaths may simply be due to the quality of hospital treatment.
