I just, I dunno, want to vent. I guess its nothing major, but it'll make me feel better

so about 2 1/2 months ago, we have a manager here thats part of the military

he found out that he needs to get certified in something to continuing getting paid for ...something

I actually don't remember all of the details, but he needed a month off to go take classes

everybody luvin AMERICUNS, he was permitted to do so. I was okay with it too

unfortunately another manager quit after this happen, so we were suddenly severely understaffed as far as keyholders go

I have to take a few steps back. We had an employee here. Shes a chick, shes attractive, shes fucking dumb as hell, doesn't do a good job, and calls in ALL of the time

Shes friends with a higher up and I think they were having an affair but I can't prove it BUT I DIGRESS

I couldn't get her fired for the life of me. The dude wouldn't allow it or would try to persuade me not to follow through with it

Anyways

He then wanted to promote her to a manager.
Everyone

EVERYONE was like

fuck you

no

NO

Even Mr. Military man hit me and Mr. Higherup up and was like thats a super bad idea

we...pretty much had no choice though. No neighboring stores wanted to lend employees, I couldn't find anyone qualified enough to fill the positions

I did it

I gave her a key

her first shift

she showed up 2 hours late

I was like, fuck her shes out. But then of course, Mr Higher up said he'd talk to her, she'll never do it again. i've heard this before but I dunno. FOR SOME REASON I gave her one more chance

Then she just no called no showed for her 2nd shift

yea, I called him, I cussed him out, Idgaf, I threatened him, I threatened to go higher up with his fucking favoritism, and I said shes gone

I seriously haven't heard from him since and I fired her

So remember Mr. Military man? He heard about us still hiring her anyways despite his protests

He quit when he got back.

So I'm here stretching myself thin AGAIN for another year because of some bullshit

I had to promote some of the underlings, my underlings unfortunately are not the best around, but I had no choice, they were still better than that one bitch

I held a job fair, I hired people from there, I even hired some regular customers

I was desperate

and unfortunately I was hurting again, the pain in my ball and socket joints in my hip came back, my right knee became bum again, I was starting to die again

I took better preparations this time and I started bandaging my knee, taking pain meds, and legit trying to take a break every once in awhile. Unfortunately I can'd DO that often because I lead the store now

some of the morons I hired didn't work out. Apparently nobody listens to orders and dont' know their ABCs anymore.

I actually had to fire one of them because of the sheer incompetence. I actually have never fired anyone before and now I'm doing it left and right

fortunately the other hires were really on the ball and I was able to train them well. Especially the regular customers now employees. Hell, theres a beauty shop next door, i hired one of the managers there lol

The store now opens on thanksgiving and it was all hands on deck. We had to be there from 2 to 11. None of my family came down this year except my mom, we were supposed to have dinner but this put a wrench in that, she had to spend the day by herself

but as far as the store goes, everything went well. I have good managers now, everything is smooth, holiday prepping went well both the other day and tonight

I'm finally relieved. Technically we've been done since Friday, but during my time off this weekend, I spent it asleep. I haven't had good sleep since 3 months

I dunno what I thought I was gonna do in life, but I never imagined I'd be a corporate gear, running a retail store like this lol

completely from left field, and I'm truly, even physically, giving it my all here

I used to be a bastard hooligan, a street thug

and now I'm hiring people, greeting customers, and all of that stuff

Its funny how life turns out sometimes

Nice job. I can't say that cussing out another manager is professional, but he deserved it. You can't promote someone just because you need to and they're attractive. Calling in all the time sounds immediately like "yeah this is absolutely not the person to promote." So he had to understand the hard way that he was a fucking idiot for pushing that move.

You're doing fantastic work and you've done your best keeping things afloat.

last year one guy bought me Dissidia and DBZfighterz as thanks for nearly killing myself

and another higher up gave me the SFII arcade machine

but they legit feel like afterthoughts, as if to say "Here so you don't complain"

I don't think I got a single, legit thanks for saving the store several times

I'm not saying you're nobody, tony, youre a bud of mine

but I'm sorta finding it sad that a guy I know online is legit more proud of me than anyone around me in the workforce

it actually brought a tear to my eye

honestly I thought I was gonna get fired

looking back on it, I think i was hoping I would

but thinking about it, if I was fired, the store would've died with me. And they probably didn't want that since we're probably the best damn store in not only the district, but the god damn region. It would've hurt them

plus, you're definitely not supposed to have favoritism. Technically I'm not permitted to hang out with my coworkers to prevent that

Same thing I would have said 6 years ago. Get a new fucking job. You have more than enough experience, connections, references etc to do it. Yes you're doing a good job and getting a lot of impressive shit done. But it's all 100% charity to your bosses. You aren't rewarded at all. Best you get is a missed Thanksgiving where your mom is alone. It's a drain on your life. Even if they gave you equity shares in gamestop, it wouldn't be worth it cuz that company is going down for sure soon. You need to take your skills to a better place.

The less you value yourself the more they can and will exploit you. Obviously there's no chance you would ever be fired in cases like these. You are prob a top 1% employee nationally. The only way they will keep you working is by keeping you ignorant of your value. They even made this chick a god damn manager, how could you possibly be at risk?

tl;dr upgrade your career already

honestly, the girl who got promoted probably had a way higher quality of life than you - made a good amount of money doing nothing, got some severance, went off to leech feom some other company.

you're probably too principled to be a deadbeat like her, but... i hope you can find someone who will appreciate you more.

Why are you still working as a store manager at GameStop dude?

I'll be blunt because honestly, with your shitty situation you can use bluntness. You have tons of retail experience as a manager. You can work anywhere with better pay and benefits. You should be trying to move forward with your career and your life dude. Always move forward. If you're not looking for something better already, look for it today. Why would you throw away money on a GameStop store manager job?

Hell, why are you protecting this inept loser who is your regional manager? Roast this fucker. Tell your higher ups what you had to do and how screwed you and your store are now as a result. Then maybe they'll at least promote you to his job sooner than later since you're reliable and have been through some shit.

Like dude. You can obviously do better than this. I don't know you personally but you've always seemed like a good guy to me, so I'm telling you as an outsider who would hope for the best for you: improve your career asap. You will love what happens and kick yourself for not doing it sooner.

A little more tough love.

A small town is really no excuse. Drive for a while if you have to for a better opportunity. Don't tell us this is the best you can have going for you. GameStop cannot be the only retail store within 45 minutes driving distance from you.

Forget a dream job. That's a dream job. We all have it and we all want it and eventually you may be able to. But you are literally just sabotaging yourself if you aren't going and looking for a better job. Hell, push for regional or something man. You can surely do a better job of it than the goon currently running your region.

I take a bus for an hour into the city to and back everyday. My girlfriend drives an hour to work every day for her job she hates every day. I don't have any sort of sympathy for people not willing to go a distance for a better job.

It really just feels like this is what's comfortable and you're settling, and that just sucks man. You don't have the credit to take out a loan for that dream? Well then get yourself a better job man and make more money and get your credit right. As far as I'm concerned, there is no excuse.

Yes, and I'm saying this is 100% charity to your bosses

What do you get for this pride? I'm talking about a real reward, not the pride itself. Spoilers: you can have pride in anything that you do well. Like your dream arcade concept. Would you have more love and pride for that, or for your gamestop? If it really is the gamestop, then fine, but I doubt it...

So your goal right now should be to get to your dream concept where you can feel TRUE pride Not so your energy and love can be mined by the bosses to keep their business going and their yachts fueled. To do that you need capital. Lots of money to open a new shop. $12 at gamestop will never get you there. But if you take the next step to a $20 job, and then another step, and then another step, and soon enough you will actually have the money and the knowledge to run a store. Barcades and such are totally growing in the US now so it's really a viable goal.

All you need is to look at your current job as a STEP in your career. Not as the peak.

My girlfriend needs to work at that school for this last year to get $15k off her student loans. I got a good opportunity in the city that I moved for. We picked a place closest in the middle. But it's a busy city, so you're just going to have a 45 minute to an hour commute every morning.

Adding two hours of commute to our day does not hurt it at all. We have tons of time to still work out, make food, and hang out and still get 8 hours of sleep. If you get a big opportunity to better yourself and make more money, it is absolutely fine to add on a commute like that. It's just a sacrifice and you have to make them sometimes to better your position in life.

Hell, I may be moving across the country next year for a big opportunity to double my salary. I'm not thrilled about that aspect, but long term it's the best move and it isn't going to be a thing forever.

If it's temporary and very well worth the extra time, then fine. But so many people think they just have to deal with long commutes because there's no other way. They don't consider the extra cost on their life

Moving so that you don't have a 2 hour commute is MUCH better than just gritting your teeth and burning a huge chunk of your life away every day. If it doubles your salary then obviously that's good. That's the difference between a sacrifice that invests in your future and one that steals from it.

Like Pun is saying he has to be stuck at the most dead end retail job possible (at least Best Buy etc aren't going bankrupt in the next 10 years), because the only alternative is a stupid long commute. Moving, trying different industries, widening prospects should all be tried first. Not to mention remote work which is possible for a lot of people. Even Pun, in addition to in-store work probably.

(Although moving for a job has its own set of risks, namely rebuilding your leverage. You can end up at the employer's mercy since they know you have no other options in the new city. But since Pun could work at literally any store with a door he would have a lot of leverage.)

Uh that escalated quickly and is clearly more propaganda that is meant to keep you scared of getting higher.

You can run your own shit and make a lot of money without getting people killed. You can choose to be an employer that empowers people with jobs and gives them an opportunity to express themselves that no one else could, for a salary that values their skills. Basically what you feel gamestop is doing for you, but for REAL.

Like look at how easily you're shitting on your dream arcade right now, just to justify your work at gamestop. You really think getting to your store requires cutthroat clawing up the food chain? You don't think your store would make people happier than that gamestop?

Your promotions and such are great, but unless you're getting equity in the company for when they die and sell off, you should invest your passion in your own things.
