Define what is normal.
Many folk live with their parents at any age for many reasons. One of them being it's cheaper in most cases. Not sure why you feel insecure man.

It's normal now - it wasn't in the past, even a single income can buy a house.

Can your McDonalds worker buy a house? No? Can they rent alone? Maybe?

Far more normal now than it was back then. I remember watching That 70's Show and it was actually weird seeing Red telling Eric to get out and whatnot.

It's costly as fuck to live on your own. I waited until I was in a relationship to move out and I lived with my mom until I was 23. I just lied and said I took care of her.

Jeez... Sounds expensive. My rent is only $750 a month... It would probably be more expensive if I moved home. Thats one of he reasons I dont want to go. Though, Im sure I would stay with my family for a little while. But my mom would probably try to help me and my brother get our own place...

Americans seem to really like kicking their children out of the house. I am Asian. I am expected to stay with my family, inherit the family, and take care of my parents when they get old.

But realistically, I "live with my family" in our Vancouver house while the rest of my family members stay mostly in Hong Kong and China. So I live with my family by myself.

30 year olds are still a bit rare, mainly due to the cost of living spike in the last 5 years or so. It wasn't super rare 12 years ago for 18-20 year olds to continue living with their parents, but it also was significantly cheaper for them to move out at that point.

Even in the last few years the cost of 1 bedrooms have skyrocketed. In fact, a place in Olympia that used to be 800$ is now 1285$ a month!! that is over a 50% increase in 3 years, and that is just one example.

At this point unless a teen graduates with a solid job paying over $20 an hour (which doesn't happen often) they either have to live with their parents, or roomates (and obviously the parent situation can often be far cheaper, and less stressful (depending on the roomates of course).

12 years ago on the other hand, you could rent a small 1 bedroom for $500-$600 most places and pay for that even working at a fast food place or any min wage job. So yeah, it was a choice back then, and many current 30 year olds decided to move out, only a few probably never did until now....when it doesn't make any sense at all anymore.

I hope it stays that low friend. It was like that here just a few years ago and jumped so much, so fast, it's scary. Everywhere is getting californicationed at this point, where you can't rent a 1 bedroom for less then $1000 a month. It's crazy.

It mostly likely will, just because of how the city here is... But if I move to another city or back home, it will definitely be more expensive...

No not normal. Just because some "adults" .. kids.. do it doesn't mean it's normal. People are more lazy today than they ever have been. Yes times are harder today but it's not that much harder... I only have a high-school diploma and make good money, have a mortgage on a house, longer term relationship 10+ years, a son and so on. So no excuse for others not to be able to go live a life away from mommy and daddy. I moved out when I was 20 and have been fine since. Also my area is west coast Canada so not cheap either.

Yeah. But you also have a family. Its different for everyone. I moved out a month after turning 20, but I was in the Air Force and made decent money. Just because its not normal for you doesnt mean its not normal. In the US, it doesnt seem normal just because of the past however many years. But in the past, people moved out when they got married. And it seemed like they had a lot of high school sweethearts getting married pretty young. I believe in other parts of the world other than the US, they have a higher percentage of people living with their parents for longer. And it seems to work better for them. Why should it be normal for someone to have to move out young, and struggle to live in a place, especially when single. Just because its easy for you doesn't mean its easy for everybody. Especially when theyre in a different area...

I feel it heavily depends on cost of living, rent/mortgage, your income, etc. I know some folks view moving out, living independently, etc. as being part of growing up and being an adult. I feel however making smart financial decisions is also a part of growing up and if swallowing one's pride, living at home, helping with utility, property tax, etc. while minimizing your spending is part of that, so be it.

What good is it to show you're "independent" if you throwing away your money on rent? Friend of mine bought a nice size home in Phoeniz, Arizona for I think $200-300k. My sister and brother-in-law recently bought a home of similar size in Los Angeles, California for $750k. Everyone's situation is bound to be different.

xjayguyx posted...

That is very vague. Friend of mine only has a high-school diploma but he works for the city with LADWP and I think makes $70-80k a year after 10+ years of working there and constantly earning new certification. But I doubt that many folks with only high school diploma can obtain what he has due to the limited number of positions available and based on how often I see the city opening up positions that only need a GED. From what he told me, the city would rather pay him to work overtime regularly than hire new technicians. That kinda screws over anyone else trying to get a foot into the door.

What? You either don't know history that well or your math skills are piss poor. Slavery existed in the US as recently as 150 years ago. The US Civil War took place from 1861-1865. That was the war that ended slavery in the US.

Women were also definitely treated as property of men too. Women didn't even get the right to vote until 1920. That was less than 100 years ago... Have you ever seen the TV series Mad Men? It's a fairly accurate portrayal of life in the 1960s, and women were treated poorly even that recently.

In all honesty, unless you were a heterosexual white man, life pretty much sucked for you before the mid-late 1900s.

Rather than being normal, there just isn't much of a choice.

Sure you could live on your own, but you wouldn't be able to afford anything and even the slightest unexpected expense would cause to spiral into uncontrollable debt.

I live with my mom I help pay stuff and cook. I also get to buy the games and can afford cable and internet. Things I would not be able to do on my own.

We do not have the same opportunities our parents did in the job market.

It's normal now - it wasn't in the past, even a single income can buy a house.

Can your McDonalds worker buy a house? No? Can they rent alone? Maybe?

Yeah, bur if you live alone, then you will be more motivated to get a better job

Being motivated is good. But motivation alone isnt going to get you a job. And it would suck if you were living alone and still couldnt get a good enough job to support yourself.
