I wonder if the 'stands out factor' that helped Kirby in multi-ways helped him against Guile, generic anime-ish guy, and other generic anime guy in a suit, and those voters are abandoning him en masse now that he's facing someone people actually know/care about.

Not really. The Sore Thumb Factor that Kirby enjoys only really works on human opponents. Put in another cartoon creature, and all hes got left is his Pokemon-level cuteness.

I don't know how much I buy into the Sore Thumb Factor really being a thing. People have primarily applied it to try to explain why Kirby and Pikachu always did so well in multi-ways, but it seems like they're the only ones it ever applies to.

Because cuteness, and because theyre the only characters popular enough to stand out. Characters like Pac-Man and Bomberman are mostly just legacy/joke hybrids.

Aeris/Tifa's performances this year make me think Ryu > Seph is dead in the water.

But above all they REALLY make me think Cloud has a shot of making the grand final.
