But the older populations (and Republicans) mostly support capitalism over socialism.

It's sad that our education system is corrupting young minds, but hopefully as they get older and wiser they realize that regulated capitalism is the best economic system we have ever devised.

Makes sense. Young generation got a raw deal and the solution the older generation has is to dismiss their concerns with "work harder"

Not suggesting that I endorse socialism as a governing philosphy btw

And for apple to give all their trillions away so that we all have a living wage.

I wonder if this has any correlation with all of the young americans that support neo-nazis and white supremacy. Young Americans refuse to learn from history, maybe we need some more statues dedicated to Goebbels, Hitler, and Stalin to be erected next to all the Confederate ones so we can finally learn a thing or two about the past.

Proudclad, you realize that we have _some_ socialism in this country already, right? roads being owned by the government is a form of socialism.

so does the article say these "young people and Democrats" want pure socialism, where everything is owned by the state? or just aspects of it integrated into our society, like we have today, but just more of it, notably for things like healthcare?

Also it'd be important to make the distinction between say Scandanavia and something like Venezuela

A fair number of people I've spoken to associate socialism with the former (even tho Scandanavia isn't really socialist) and not so much the latter

They have no idea what socialism means.

A lot of people think that public health insurance is socialism, or even just basic worker protections.

And of course, there are some loonies that actually want Marx-style socialism.

But polls like this are pretty meaningless if everyone who answers it have their own different interpretation of just what the fuck socialism actually means.

There's certainly an element of populism that is reactionary. Commies and Nazis hate each other, and as one side grows the other side will grow too. As a reaction to the other side growing. That's why we need strong moderate voices more than ever.

Perhaps it has something to do with coming out of college on the heels of the Great Recession into an economy that is still stagnating while workers wages have basically flatlined compared to what our economic growth is showing? Capitalism, and especially the whole Reganomics type, and specifically in the West, hasn't improved the lives of a good number of people which has forced them to look for alternatives.

It's the same reason why populism and nationalism in general has been on the rise recently, and ditto for Libertarianism. You basically have an entire generation of people who haven't seen tangible results in conventional capitalism and are begging for a change to the entire system.

This isn't even defending any of these alternatives, but it's the most logical response. You tell people for decades that the system they have is the best yet show little to no actual results for the average person, and they'll eventually sneak alternatives. You can only bullshit the masses for so long before they react.

I disagree with your assessment, but it's hilarious that someone who believes this would posit socialism as a viable alternative for improving the standard of living. Even though we've seen throughout the entire 20th and 21st centuries that it simply collapses standards of living and entire countries.

then i grew up, experienced the real world for a while and i was converted back to a Democrat.

That's so laughably false it almost hurts. No one is brainwashing anyone, people who have struggled due to conventional Reganomic style economy want a change from convention. Stagnant wages and losses of jobs have created a culture where people are desperate for something, or someone, to change the system and don't give a damn if that means changing their prior held assumptions.

It isn't about not working but working less or not as hard.

A usi wage isn't supposed to pay for much so that people still do jobs.

Ex: being a youtuber

You could try that now and not get a dime for a long time and maybe start making money but get very little.

Now imagine a usi wage. You can subside off that until you get up and running and then making a little becomes alot.

If you invest $200 a month from ages 25 to 67 at 10% per year, you will end up with $1,550,794 at retirement age. $633,409 when adjusted for inflation.

This assumes you stash away just $200 a month for that long, and that you never get a raise, never get any match from any employer, and never make extra money from a side business. In other words, if someone is under 30 and is able-bodied and doesn't retire when they reach retirement age, it's because they were being a fucking loser.

In fact, the numbers are even more impressive if you're serious about saving for retirement, because you should easily be able to save much more than $200 per month. With that much time for compounding interest to do its work, there's no reason why the average American cannot retire as a multi-millionaire. The basic math checks out, so cry me a river.
