Seeing stuff with your family would never really bother me. Unless its something that my significant other knew I really wanted to watch with them then its not a big deal.

I went to one movie alone. It's really uncomfortable. It would be nearly on par with going to a sit in restaurant alone.

And it's a dick move because you're basically forcing your SO to either suffer through it alone or wait months for it to be released on DVD, just because you're too lazy/cheap to see it a second time. There's nothing insecure about hoping your SO will do things with you.

Id be a little annoyed, but Id get over it.

Honestly Id be more confused as to why she wouldnt want to go again if Im paying for the tickets anyway.

I don't see it as a dick move on her part for spending time with her family nor would I have any major issue going to see said film myself. Although chances are if I had nobody to go with I'd just not watch it at the pictures and save myself some cash.

Needs more context.

Did your SO know you wanted to see it with them? Or would it have been reasonable to assume that was the case?

If yes, then I would consider that "a dick move."

If no, then I would not. That is a case of a failure to communicate. And that is not on the SO.

Considering you're in a dark room where everybody's eyes are focused on the screen, it's nothing like sitting in a restaurant alone. >_>

tbh, back when I was in college, I'd sometimes catch morning (or I guess noontime?) matinees by myself. The tickets were cheap, you usually had the theater almost to yourself, and honestly I found it a much nicer experience than the busier showings.

Man, nothing beats sitting in a big room next to people you know while not talking or making eye contact for 90 to 180 minutes, only to give basic initial thoughts and opinions on the film on the way back out to your car.

/s kinda

I have no issues seeing movies alone and prefer to see them alone cause I usually sit 2nd or 3rd row from the screenerino.

For everyone so damn worried about going to the theater alone I have questions

How many people do you make a point to notice and judge (mentally or verbally) when you see that they've come to the theater alone? Do you even notice at all? And if you actually do notice do you immediately peg them as a loser who's single for life no exceptions?

And do you have kids? Because...god, just the idea of the idea of the sliver of hope that I one day may have the free time needed to actually go to a theater by myself sometimes and watch any movie rated PG-13 or higher only makes me happy. I'd imagine you haven't had the pleasure yet of dragging your little jerks along with you everywhere all the time if you think solitude in the theater is such a bad deal. Honestly, I'd love to have your problem actually.

No, though it's surprising that my SO somehow became a female. And that his parents came back to life. But still, not a dick move. People spend time with their families all the time. That being said, I wouldn't mind going by myself. Though, I guess I wouldn't really be in this situation, anyway.

I still haven't seen the last Harry Potter, because me and the lady of the time had plans to see it, then saw it with her sister. It annoyed me so much it pretty much killed the entire series for me.

And I actually love going to a movie alone. So it had nothing to do with that.

I don't necessarily care about going to the movies alone, and I've done it a few times in the past.

But I've kind of reached a point in my life where there really AREN'T any movies out that I'm so super-stoked about that I desperately want to see them as soon as possible in theaters anyway. So the only times I really go to the movies is to take my nephew to see the Marvel movies (because he really enjoys them, and doesn't really have any other family or friends who'll go with him), or if my GF wants to see a movie and drags me along.

If no one else wants to see something, I'm usually just content for it to eventually come out on cable or DVD so I can watch it at home.

Was it a dick move on part of your SO?

Only if you told them in advance that you wanted to see the movie with them, and they implied they'd be up for it, and then went and saw it with someone else without you. If you don't say anything to them about it and don't make plans, and they take the initiative to see it with someone else, then that's kind of on you.

Though in my experience, at least, a caring SO might/should be willing to see the movie again with you anyway, unless they hated it so much the first time that they just can't endure being forced to watch it again. Because one of the things you learn about being an adult (especially an adult in relationships) is that sometimes (or a lot of the time), you're going to have to do things you don't necessarily want to do because someone else in your life wants to do them. I've definitely had friends (and I've also been the friend who does it) offer to go see a movie again just so that someone else can see a movie with someone else.

Sort of a "I get that you're not comfortable seeing movies alone, or just enjoy them more if you can watch them with other people, and I kind of enjoyed - or at least didn't hate - the movie the first time, so I'll go along because I care about you as a person" situation.

While you're not necessarily wrong, I'd argue that the idea that people who go to movies alone are somehow flawed because they can't find someone to go with is pretty strongly ingrained in culture as a whole, and plenty of people who are otherwise fairly well-adjusted can easily feel that way. I'd definitely say I know far more people who wouldn't be willing to go to the movies alone than I do people who would, and I'm talking about people who are otherwise extremely well-adjusted or otherwise socially adept (especially since most of the people I know at this point in my life are married and have kids). And Western media in general has portrayed that idea for decades, sort of underlining the idea that you're a loser if you see movies alone.

If anything, a case could even be made that the antisocial trend present in the average "Internet-er" might make them MORE inclined to see movies alone, if only because the awkwardness and anxiety of trying to find someone to go with in the first place outweighs the stresses of simply going alone. Though admittedly the more likely scenario there is that they just don't go at all, and pirate the movie on the Internet later because they feel like the world owes them something.

To be fair, most of modern Western culture is pretty much predicated on constantly seeking one form of escapism or another at all times. We treat work as a burden that must be endured and media as something we seek out to fulfill ourselves.

There's very few people in the population as a whole who are eschewing media entirely and having their own adventurous life.

Certainly no one posting in this topic, because by definition social message boards on the Internet are just another form of media escapism in their own way.
