Does your state require you to have insurance just to get a license?

I guess Texas does. I had to get a new license since mine technically expired like 6 years ago. But because of the Air Force, I didn't have to get one. But because of my other job and my having to get a CDL, I renewed it and had to show I had insurance. Which I did.

But then I started to pay attention to everyone else. And for even the kids trying to get a permit, they had to have insurance. When I got my license back in Maryland, I didn't have to have insurance just to get the license. It just seems weird. Because that means that it would be hard to get a license without knowing someone with a car that would put you on their insurance.

When I got my license I did not need insurance to get it

However if you go the traditional route of taking a driving course at the DMV youll sometimes be responsible for providing the vehicle for the test and youll need to have insurance for that vehicle. That insurance can be under someone elses name but they would have to add you onto it I believe

I thought it was really weird, too. But I heard it over and over again. I was there at DPS a lot for a couple months. I ever asked my SO, since he was born here. And spent a lot of his life in Texas. And he was saying that you had to have insurance to get a license. I even needed it to get it renewed. So, I don't know what I would have done if I didn't have a car and insurance at the time...

Yeah. I thought about that, too. Which could make sense since you need to drive a vehicle for the test. Though, I didn't have to do that back home. But you also need it to get it renewed.

Can't remember, but I'm not sure that it really could because you can get a license without owning a vehicle.

And that's why I thought it was weird. I think most people get a car after getting a license.

Ill have to ask a few army buddies that ended up in Texas. I could almost see insurance being necessary to register or purchase a car, but for a license seems odd.

In NC you need liability insurance in order to get your license.

The car is insured, not the driver. So if you were to get an auto insurance policy, you would need to own a car that would receive the coverage. And unless you have really shitty insurance, the policy on that car would cover anyone else driving it, such as a friend. The only way you would possibly get in trouble is if there was a regular driver of the car that you failed to list on the car (for example, if a husband and wife have a policy on a car but omit the husband as a driver because his bad driving history would cause the rates to go up).

So no, you shouldnt be required to prove you have auto insurance on you, since thats not how it works. If youre taking a driving test though, you might need to prove that the car you are using is covered.

This isn't true. They're both insured. You can have instances where sometimes there's no coverage for certain people who drive your vehicle.

You can't get a license without taking a driving test, you can't take the driving test without driving, and you can't drive without insurance, ergo, you can't get a license without insurance.
