Who (in the gaming industry, at least) would hire someone who easily flies off the handle, and cries "misogyny" at anyone who disagrees with her, even if the topic had nothing to do with identity politics at all?

Something doesn't have to be explicitly stated for a conversation to be about something. If you walk into a conversation blathering on without really understanding the topic, you send the message that you're either an asshole or an idiot. Or both. You send this message even if it's not explicitly stated.

Good lord, just read some of the reactionary propaganda criticizing the firing which, unsurprisingly, provides *zero* content regarding the tweets themselves and just tells the story from Price's narrative.

Wanted to post a vid of a guy saying "Collateral damage," but couldn't immediately find one (and can't remember the movie where a character callously uses those words to answer a question about somebody else being hurt in an attack). However, his defense, while small, was extremely tone-deaf and unprofessional. He got caught up in a controversy because he deliberately inserted himself into the controversy in a provocatively stupid way.

He said one thing which wasn't bad at all. Him getting fired was moronic.

Him posting what he posted was moronic. Him getting fired for it because he chose to involve himself in the stupidest way possible could be seen as a little overboard, but he had made himself into a PR disaster.

Revelation34 posted...
Because companies are full of morons that think something a person did off their time is grounds for firing. Like the Chick-fil-A guy when it has no actual bearing on the company.

Bad press can have a direct impact on your company, especially when you're identifying yourself in relation to not just your company but a company in the entertainment industry. As for Chik-fil-A guy, his douchebaggery had less of a connection to his job although it's kinda hard to feel bad for an asshole taping themselves berating a fast food employee and then choosing to upload that footage.

And this isn't really a new phenomenon, it's just been updated for the internet age. You've always had at least some repercussions for egregious off-the-job conduct.

By this logic, anything could be fabricated to something. We could talk about the weather, and you could start listing off how many microaggressions you spotted about how I noticed a cloud in the sky.

Now if you actually read the actual conversation between Price and Denior, youd know nothing was said about gender issues...at all.... nothing was implied, there was no misunderstanding, there were no oppression of the patriarchy.....

And that Price has a very bad reputation (as Ive learned going deeper into the story, and who she is) for constantly pulling the gender card when things dont go her way.

Putting something on SOCIAL MEDIA where it is open to public response and interpretation, and then responding with "DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO THIS IS MY SPACE" is infantile and simply incorrect. Her coworkers said "she never asked for any feedback." Well too bad, homefry, she put it on twitter. She could have put it on a personal blog. She could even have a personal locked twitter that only accepts friends, family, but no this is a public twitter account. It's like standing on your front step and shouting your opinion to the neighborhood and someone on the sidewalk disagrees and you say "I DIDN'T ASK YOU. TYPICAL TO ATTACK FEMALES."

But I also think people celebrating and dancing around like TC shrieking with joy waving their tendies in the air are just as bad. You're kind of proving her right from the "being harassed" standpoint. People who behave that way make others feel attacked and vulnerable and they might lash out in retaliation.

It's funny watching gaming publications rally their wagons around Price and decry the community -- questioning if the aggrieved are gamers at all -- when these *same* publications gave credence and legitimacy to military non-gaming feminists who were attacking the industry and the community. Small wonder why traditional video game journalism -- which has at times been shown to be literally in bed with the industry -- has been losing ground in recent years.

As said before there is good activism if the cause is noble, and there is a time and place to excerise those views, and then the bad activism that choose to piggy-back on that noble cause for their own person gain....and is a total bitch about it.

Nothing wrong with (First-wave) Feminsm because its simply about garnering a state of equality for opportunity. But when you are abusing that notion as a get out of jail card, because you dont want to lose a covseration, or simply dont want to be humbled, that is where identity politics flys civility right out the window.

In short Price was fired because of her self-entitled views, which lack civility.

He said something wrong. It just wasn't as wrong as anything she said, and arguably wasn't wrong enough to justify firing. But it was wrong enough, at precisely the wrong time, in the wrong situation, to lead to him getting equally fucked.

The real problem is that she created the firestorm and was justifiably burned by it, but he jumped into a situation that was already catching fire, and got burned by his own ill-thought out action. Had his specific comment been more defensible even by the detractors (in a "I disagree but acknowledge your logic" sort of way, rather than a "you're blatantly wrong and defending a repugnant lunatic" sort of way), or had the situation been less volatile, he likely would have survived it. As is, he picked up a stick of live dynamite, and it's not surprising that it blew his hand off.

Ultimately, the fair thing in this scenario would be if he could at least get rehired elsewhere with little to no blowback from the Internet, while she should never be hired by any company with even a pretense of public relations or audience interaction until she at least demonstrates that she understands what she did wrong and honestly regrets her actions (which she will almost certainly never, ever do).

No he didn't. Not one bit was what he said bad.

No, but 100% of what he said was factually wrong, at a time he really shouldn't have been saying it. That's what hurt him more than anything.

He stepped into a situation that didn't concern him, and it blew up in his face. In and of itself, without context and completely isolated from all other factors, no, what he said wasn't really worth firing. But in context, it helped exacerbate the situation and made him a target, while the other person involved was/is constantly throwing gasoline on to an already blazing fire and screaming her own self-perceived martyrdom.

There is literally no way he was walking away from this unscathed. And honestly, there's no real way he could have walked away from it unscathed without hurting the company's public image. He was doomed the moment he posted that message, and it's very much a "fair, next" situation.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again - if people don't like the idea that one stray thought or comment can destroy their entire life as the masses turn against them for it, they need to stay the fuck off Twitter. Like it or not, there is an implicit responsibility and acceptance of potential consequences when you post publicly on social media, especially when you do so in a capacity that reflects upon your employer. And yes, that employer is absolutely justified in cutting you the fuck loose if your own behavior has made you a PR liability in a business that is like 90% PR-driven.

If he'd posted as "Peter Fries, private individual" he probably would have been fine. But he posted as "Peter Fries, Guild Wars writer" (while she herself was creating the firestorm as "Jessica Price, Guild Wars writer", he was effectively representing the company in a public space.

Perhaps next time, he'll think harder before throwing himself on the grenade for someone causing a massive PR shitstorm almost entirely by her own actions. It will be valuable life experience for his next job.
