scarlet was making the point that he doesn't participate in a save my character contest anymore because he gets too invested in those contests, but he phrased it in an unfortunate manner which made it seem to many users as if he thought his own opinions on characters were objectively better than other people's (or something like that). this caused several users to lash out against him with accusations of pretension and elitism, which made him respond with defensive posts. drama drama etc. now we're all cool again, though (i hope).

Two way blocking is slightly harder to code and whoever does the site design clearly can't code or think about how people would realistically use features for shit given the awful implementation of pretty much every feature on this site, so despite the story they may have fed you when you asked that's no doubt the real reason.

That's pretty bad logic. If I block someone, I want them out of my life essentially. And this does not accomplish that.

Not really, cause people are quoting Ulti, and he has many alts. So they're still affecting the discussions in my topics since other can reply. The way it is now I can't guarantee I have a thread without his input, just that I can't see his input.

What I'm saying is if you want a specific person out of your topics, the block feature should incorporate this. As well as prevent them from seeing YOUR posts in other topics.

See, this is just silly though.

Let's say Lasa and I get in an argument and he decides he doesn't want to see my posts any more. He blocks me. But I still want to see his posts - he makes interesting arguments and I enjoy seeing what he has to say. Why should he be able to limit the content I can view, just because he wants to limit his own view?

It's vaguely annoying to have people I've blocked post at me and expect me to reply, and then post at me enough that I need to unblock them to follow the conversation

But needing to follow the conversation is going to happen regardless so I think just because there might be some people who have me blocked who I'd rather read than not the way it's implemented now is better

I'm just saying the answer for why GameFAQs does it one way is because GameFAQs is lazy, regardless of what they tell you.

Being blocked doesn't necessarily mean you're a jerk, or that you did anything wrong. It just means that the other person doesn't want to read your posts.

Like say scarlet blocked charon because he doesn't want to see the contest. (I'm not sure that's what happened but it's just for example) That's perfectly fine. But charon did nothing wrong. If scarlet starts a writing project and charon wants to read along then he should be able to.

Same if people want to block out SMFFFC or Mercs or any other kind of topic.

I can see both sides.

On one hand, I get the "the other person didn't necessarily do anything wrong" argument and they could be being blocked from seeing meaningful content (of course, having a lurker alt no one knows about fixes this).

On the other hand, it's annoying seeing new posts in your topic and when you click on the icon or notification is just strands you at the top of the page because you can't see the oldest unread post. Not especially a problem here because I only have four B8ers blocked and two of them never post in my own topics, but it was annoying as fuck on the Smash Bros. board where I had like 40 of these complete shitposters blocked.

I don't understand why blocking someone shouldn't be all inclusive. I don't wish to have someone respond to or even read my posts. Literally every other platform does it this way. It's only Gamefaqs where if I block someone, they can read everything I post still.

How is this hard to wrap your head around?

Because GameFAQs isn't your own personal blog, it's a totally public forum for everyone to share. It works for stuff like Twitter and Facebook, because those are personal.

But because it's totally public, that means it's open for harassment. I don't think a single person would complain if this feature was added. Except for maybe the person that got blocked, but obviously we don't care what they think if they're being blocked in the first place. And even though it's public, a topic you create is made by you and you alone. Same as any Tweet or Facebook post.

earlier in this topic scarlet was saying that he strongly considered blocking me - if that happened, i'd still like to read scarlet's posts. you can say "yeah but you're a piece of shit so your opinion on this doesn't matter," but i hope you understand that i don't find that a particularly convincing counterargument.
