Being able to block people from seeing posts is a terrible idea. It would allow others to rally people behind petty vendettas and more or less lock someone out of the board if enough people blocked them.

Plus it would do nothing to stop the Ulti's of the board because they'd just browse on one of their million troll alts.

It is not hard to not respond to people you do not wish to.

People harassing you is a moderatable offense and will be taken care of with sufficient evidence of behavior occuring.

Not being able to see stuff should be a strictly moderator decision. Not a user choice.

My main problem with that topic is that there are legit conservative/republicans on this board - or even people that lean even slightly more right - that don't post there. I'm not saying they have to, but I don't like that topic being an echo chamber, and I don't think the current crop of people arguing in a more right-leaning direction are up to the task. It'd help if there was actual genuine discussion in good faith. I don't think we're getting that right now, because the only people arguing against a Jakyl or a whoever in that topic are...well, you know.

So more (legit) conservatives/republicans or even more opposing views from the other side of the spectrum would be better

When you make a general topic, conversation will drift to the topics that people want to discuss back and forth. If they are not talking about something you wanted to, it is because you either did not bring up the topic or others did not find it discuss worthy to discuss it with you.

To elaborate, even though you didn't ask.

I'd say socially I'm liberal though I think most people who consider themselves socially liberal have an inflated sense of importance so I tend to dissociate from that crowd. If pressed on pretty much any social issue the answer will be the liberal one without thinking, though probably like 60% of the time it'll be "yeah whatever I agree but this isn't really that important can we focus on something else"

Financially is hard to define. I agree with the ideology of a lot of liberal financial policies (like government provided healthcare, financial aid for the poor, etc etc) but in practice in the US it's botched so badly that it's hard to say I support a lot of it. I think the US has pretty much the worst level of giving a shit about the poor vs not, in that it doesn't care enough to help most people that need it in a meaningful way, but does care enough to burden the middle class with inefficient spending.

Foreign policy I'm probably closer to conservative than liberal though I'm kinda off both schools there. I think the United States spends too much on foreign policy in general. Conservatives overspend on military and liberals overspend on foreign aid so you're screwed either way.

So yeah I'd say that is liberal leaning overall, but if you'd ask if I identify as a liberal the answer would be no. But if I have to choose between liberal or conservative yeah I guess I'd choose liberal.

And I used to post in the politics topic, but it's just not worth the effort. There are some good people to discuss things with in there-- most I would say, even, but they get muffled by like 5 users who provide no content of value aside from bashing people they don't like and links to twitter posts, and somehow end up having among the most posts in there. Silence those people and it would no longer have an echo chamber vibe but yeah.

And I think the problem is most reasonable conservatives just don't like to talk about politics much so you get a disproportionate amount of crazy ones on message boards. Like that's my observation in the wild, anyway. Most conservatives I know just don't really talk about politics. Maybe because they know I'm a (sorta) liberal? I dunno.

I'm not sure this is true anymore. I'm solidly a Canadian conservative but I would seem liberal in the politics topic just because the American right is so extreme. You pretty much need to be a Vlado or an Ulti to side with Trump these days.

It's worse than unusable.

Nobody (including me) can control themselves. We see bait, we, as a collective, will take it 100% of the time if its dangled in front of us long enough. A lot of us can ignore it when Ulti or SephyG drops a turd in the thread, especially if we have them blocked, but the longer their debates with people who can't go on, the more and more inclined the rest of the people are to jump in. Even if they're blocked you can still see the replies to them. Red sox isn't that bad, but sooner or later, both of your navel-gazing will consume the topic and it becomes very difficult to talk about anything productive. It's red meat, it's tantalizing but ultimately empty calories that's a complete waste of everybody's time. Genuine posts are lost in the trash and people aren't as likely to discuss important things when something spicier is going on.

Like, you're actually like it's not an issue if people go into random topics and make offtopic shitposts and try to derail discussion.

Part of the problem is the inherent tribalism in it means very very often people won't accept Trump's gaffes are gaffes. Similarly sometimes I think they're overblown, but at this point I just roll my eyes at some of the defences of Trump. The thing is he's done so many different things in so many different ways that it seems awfully coincidental that you can honestly defend him every single time. In the same way it seems a remarkable coincidence to me that you can have every "liberal" opinion or every "conservative" opinion with the same conviction in all areas.

That said, I have zero idea why you guys struggle so much with just talking with people. You should be trying to understand and discuss positions. Not trying to win them.

Almost every single discussion with the supposed "conservative trolls" goes the way it is because your conversations are always framed that one side is right and the other is absolutely wrong and by God your side will be the Victor. I understand the issue of users who intentionally bait others. The problem is that so many of the people who claim to be against this sort of baiting or circular trolling and response participate in it themselves. So there's a large amount of lip service that isn't followed with any real action. In this case, it should be followed with inaction.

I mean, when I got to the point of being done with Ulti in that thread where he lied about Oceans 8, I did actually block him. And I think it's important t to draw lines from time to time . Ulti participates in bad faith discussions that don't promote the board as a community. If we want politics topics to not resemble trashy backwater imageboards, we have to demonstrate that we won t engage in bad faith behavior.

Most behavior that is destructive to discussion in the politics topic isn't from the people "baiting" it's from the peanut gallery people who waste post space decrying the merit of responding to the person because they're a troll or whatever. The topic becomes significantly more readable if there's only a stupid post and not a stupid post followed by 5 people saying how stupid the post is while providing no insight of their own.
