https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Eastern_role-playing_video_games

Eastern role-playing video games (RPGs) are RPGs developed in East Asia. Most Eastern RPGs are Japanese role-playing video games (JRPGs)

New directions and renaissance (2010s)
Hunting RPGs are a type of action RPG subgenre featuring the player and an optional team of up to three other players hunting down larger monsters with a set amount of time, using weapons crafted from the materials extracted from the map and/or from the monsters themselves. Unlike most RPG genres, the monsters have no health bars or hit points, but have stronger attack and defense stats, forcing the players to use survival items and coordinated strategies to eliminate a specific monster. First appeared in Capcom's Monster Hunter franchise, these games later expanded the hunting RPG genre into other games as well, such as Bandai Namco Entertainment's God Eater franchise.

Soulslike games are a relatively new genre born due to popularity of the Souls series. Those games generally have common elements like high difficulty, high-risk combat with hard-hitting enemies, sparse checkpoints, and enemies dropping souls (or some other resource used for upgrading stats and/or weapons that is lost upon death), but the player has one chance to regain the dropped souls if they can reach the place of their death without dying again. Examples of this type of game are: Dragon's Dogma, Lords of the Fallen, Bound by Flame, Bloodborne, DarkMaus, Nioh, The Surge, Ashen.

I mean, I was trying to give a broad sampling of my favorite RPGs across multiple franchises.
I agree III is great and IV is still a decent game. I did want to recommend all the main Suikoden games, but figured the suggestion would be brushed off if I didn't pick a few specific titles out.

I want more than any other game, a Suikoden that takes place chronologically after III. I really liked how the plot felt like it was moving towards some sort of final conflict, probably centered around Harmonia, and would like to see a firm conclusion to the various plots.
It was also intriguing seeing the antagonists' perspective in the post-game and seeing Leeknat as being more.... "morally grey" than is usually presented.

I always thought, based on that it'd be really interesting as well to have (spoilers only b/c it's impossible to talk about w/o mentioning the spoiler above) a Suikoden II spinoff where Jowy is the main character and he's also being guided by Leknaat to collect his own 108 stars of destiny, because she's manipulating both him and Riou into renewing the fated conflict between their two runes for her own reasons.

That's actually a very good idea for a Suikoden game. Kind of blew my mind there. I think Suikoden fans need to get together and work on the games we want to see come to life. A fan project I think is worthwhile would be remasters, with trophies. Then obviously, games that continue the plot and explore other areas and true runes would be great.

You should start with Final Fantasy, the most famous JRPG.

No matter what system (even your phone) you have, you can play at least 1, but most likely more than 1 FF games.
