Board 8 > Time to count down my Top 50 Video Game Characters

For no particular reason other than I feel like writing a little something about the characters that I have enjoyed the most in my gaming life.

Those who know me pretty well pretty much know what my favorite games/series/genres are and probably know what to expect for variety (or lack thereof?) but there will definitely be a few surprises in here. For those of you who don't, maybe a little "get to know me" potential?

Also I didn't think particularly hard when making this list so the bottom 10 or so are probably subject to change within days when I go "oh yeah, I forgot him/her." I won't change the list but probably make a note at the end some characters that may have made it any other day. Top 25-30 or so are pretty rock solid though.

50. Wolf O'Donnell (Star Fox 64)
Gotta love it when two bitter rivals actually have a ton of respect for each other. Wolf is cocky and frequently fighting on the "wrong" side, but just as often teams up with Fox and crew because he's a guy who is always and only looking out for his own best interest, whether that means his life or his wallet. I've always wanted to see a Star Fox Origins game with Fox and Wolf training together and depicting the beginning of their rivalry.

49. Waluigi (Mario Tennis)
Waluigi is just so ridiculous that I can't help but love him. He started out as a doubles partner to Wario and has basically become one of the biggest running jokes in the gaming universe, being the subject of a meme and one of Nintendo's favorite butt monkeys. He was once my go-to in Mario spin-offs and is still one of my favorite secondaries.

48. Joshua (Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones)
I love Joshua's bluntness when you first meet him. He's ready to slit your throat but decides to join your party for the pretty girls (and some money). I LOVE using myrmidons in the GBA games and Joshua can wreck through a lot of the early maps in Sacred Stones. But my favorite thing about him is how much he softens up in his supports with Natasha. Definitely one of my favorite ships in the Fire Emblem universe.

47. Cyan Garamonde (Final Fantasy VI)
Everyone has their own favorite out of the ensemble cast of FF6. Mine is Cyan. An odd choice, but he bizarre Old English dialect and reminds me a lot of a certain other character that I love, and it was tough to watch him go through seeing his family die, but it was also very nice to see him get some closure through the letters that he writes. Oh, and he has a pretty killer 'stache.

46. Kenny (The Walking Dead)
Kenny is an asshole, and at the same time kind of a sweetheart. His ideas and opinions are actually generally the most sensible and logical for survival on the journey, but he's just way too blunt and forceful for anyone to support him. Even I struggled to stick up for him a lot of the time. But at the same time I tried to keep him in regards as a friend because I could see how hard he was trying to get along, and he was tenuously accepting when I revealed the truth about Lee to him. He's also forgiving enough to risk his own life to humanely euthanize Ben, but the real moment that gets him on this list for me is when he had to watch his family die in the woods with Lee by his side. I actually genuinely got choked up here.

45. Pikachu (Pokemon Red/Blue)
Pokemon are tough for me because, ignoring the anime, they don't have too much character, and only counting the main series, have virtually none. But there are certain designs I like and Pikachu is not only super cute but also versatile enough to lend itself to games like Detective Pikachu. More over, he was my main in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, to the point where my friends would often try to set a "Matt can't use Pikachu" rule. Yeah right. But yeah, in the main games he's just an avatar like any other Pokemon, and one that I rarely use at that. So I'll put him here and be done with it.

44. Ness (Earthbound)
Another Smash Bros. main, this time from 64. That back throw was killer. I had never heard of Earthbound before that, but once I learned of it I quickly got to playing it and loved it to death. Ness may not be the deepest character but he's got a fun little design that's fitting for the crazy-ass game he is in, and who doesn't love spamming PEE-KAY-FI-YAR!!

43. Umbreon (Pokemon Gold/Silver)
I promise there aren't many Pokemon on the list. In fact, just one more after this. Umbreon is a damn personal favorite though. Whenever there's a gift Eevee in the main story, I almost ALWAYS use an Umbreon on my team. I LOVE dark types and Umbreon is just so cool looking and fun to raise, forget the rest of your Eeveelutions, Umbreon will always reign supreme.

42. Sonic the Hedgehog (Sonic the Hedgehog)
Fun to play as in the hectic old-school games and hilariously cringeworthy to listen to in the poorly-written 3D games, the Sonic series will always be a favorite of mine. And Sonic himself doesn't suffer too much from the newer games. Not as much as, say, Shadow. *shudder* Plus he's just got one of the damn coolest designs ever.
