Why do Conservatives so often (yes, it's a generalization, but I've literally never heard this from a person the Left) conflate the law with morality?

Laws can be written based on morals, but laws are not inherently moral, and thus breaking them is not immoral.

Now if you do something immoral, like murder or steal, then you are being immoral, AND breaking the law.

Personally, I think it's a copout. The reason I equated SHS to Corrik in the last topic is because they constantly avoid taking moral stances on anything by saying "well it doesn't matter what I think because it's illegal". They do this rather than have the guts to admit that they hold unconscionable beliefs that they won't dare vocalize outright.

Or they could try and do it the way they're supposed to, in which case the Democrats will support it because the alternative is getting destroyed for willfully allowing it to happen.

That's exactly why they'll never do it, though. Hatred for liberals is probably the most popular part of the GOP platform these days.

Are we all ready for the infuriating spin that's going to come out over the efforts to "solve" this legislatively?

Democrats have a bill to end this that has 48/49 of them onboard. 0 Republicans.

But instead of a clean bill to end this it'll be used by Republicans as a bargaining chip to try and get other policies through.

Ah, sorry, made that post when I was in a pretty poor state of mind and wasn't back until now.

It's mentioned at the end of this article, albeit not in-depth because it analyzes what is likely to happen in Congress this week and the Democrats are powerless here, but: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2018/06/18/whats-happening-on-immigration-in-congress-this-week-a-day-by-day-guide

However, I should note that since I made that post, Manchin - who was the last Dem Senator not in support - declared his support for it. So now it's all 49 of the Dems (and King and Sanders). 0 Republicans.

The people of Germany are turning against their leadership as migration is rocking the already tenuous Berlin coalition. Crime in Germany is way up. Big mistake made all over Europe in allowing millions of people in who have so strongly and violently changed their culture!

https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/18/politics/german-crime-rate-trump-immigration/index.html

But data from the German government suggests Trump's hypothesis on crime is incorrect. Statistics from the Federal Ministry of the Interior show that 2017 saw the lowest number of crimes committed in Germany since 1992. The number of non-German suspects dropped almost 23% from 2016 to 2017.

I don't think so. If anyone has data since, say, 2011, covering the period since the refugee crisis in Europe started, that would allow us to decide if the gist of Trump's statements is true or not. That the crime rate among non-Germans fell from 2016 to 2017 is itself far from sufficient, as Trump made no claims with that degree of specificity. I'm also pretty sure that the majority of non-Germans in Germans are citizens of other EU countries and not refugees. The EU has free movement of its citizens after all.

the thing with trump's statement is that it's so vague that i'm sure you can find SOME way to interpret it in a way that it's not wrong. "crime rate in germany is way up"? since when? last week? last year? compared to 40 years ago? if he's linking it to migration (which he is) he should be a lot more specific than this.

The overall crime rate doesn't prove anything about migrants. The vast majority of people in Germany are German. The next largest group is EU citizens from other countries (please correct me if this is wrong, I'm not certain). Even among immigrants, there are a lot of people who are not refugees from the Middle East.

The most tenuous thing about what Trump said is actually his implicit equating of refugees from the Middle East to migrants from Central America. That's an assertion made without evidence, and done well enough that no one here called him out on it.

the problem isn't that it's "hyperbole," it's that it's nonsense to begin with. i'm not saying "he's way too hyperbolic but he's right about immigrants having changed my country's culture for the worse," i'm saying "i don't agree at all with the notion that my country's culture has changed to any signfiicant degree because of immigrants." even the far right politicians here would agree with this - they're not saying "WE LIVE IN A DYSTOPIAN WASTELAND NOW BECAUSE OF IMMIGRANTS WE NEED TO CHANGE IT BACK," they're saying we need to close the borders and stop any more immigrants from coming in BEFORE our culture is changed for the worse. it's common sense, too - the idea that immigrants could so easily change a culture that's existed for centuries is lolworthy.

and just like the "crime rate" statement, another issue is that the statement is so vague that it's pretty much meaningless. he should tell us specifically what immigrants have changed about our culture for the worse.
