A 15 y/o Oregon Teenager who started the major wildfire in the Columbia River Gorge is ordered to pay restitution for the next decade as it's unlikely he will ever cover his 37 MILLION dollar bill!!

Judge John A.Olson said the restitution totaling 36,618,330.24 to cover the costs of firefighting, repair and restoration to the gorge and damage to homes

Victims include the US Forest Service and Oregon Department of Transportation

The 15 y/o from Vancouver, Washington acknowledged his wrongdoing and said he threw 2 fireworks into the Eagle Creek Canyon where the fire spread quickly. He describes himself as a "CHURCHGOING SNOWBOARDER" and his mother is a stay at home mom and father is a cook.

The identity of the family is private to keep secret from the public backlash.

His family is from Russia as his mother spoke in russian that his son made a mistake but that he shouldn't have to pay such a massive bill that he will never be able to pay

The fire caused evacuations, an extended shutdown of a major interstate highway and devastation to a major outdoor tourist attraction

The judge said he could set up a PAYMENT PLAN through payments that can be halted after 10 years as long as he commplies, completes probation and doesn't commit any crimes

His laywer said the extraordinary amount is absurd

The teen plead guilty to reckless burning of public and private property and other charges and was sentenced to 5 years of probation and 1920 hours of community service and must write more than 150 letters of apology to those affected by the fire

If he's due refunds on his tax returns, the state could take those and if he wins the lottery, they could take all of his winnings too. Anger at the boy was so intense that they kept the identity withheld for safety of the family.

Do you think this kid should be let off the hook for this massive bill?.

The fire he caused -

Dude, you realize that 10 isn't really in line of the average persons life span? Even if you make a decent to low wage, there is still no way in he'll that will equal up to time of death.
It makes me wander why they would sue that much anyways depending on the persons finance situation. What so they think people are made of? Money? Nahh...

Maybe I am miss comprehending what it is saying. But it seems like after the ten years, if he completes his probation and doesn't commit any crimes. He won't have to continue the payment plan. If not, then he will be paying for the rest of his life. Seems fair to me.

Oregonian here.

His stupidity and carelessness destroyed one of the most beautiful areas of the state. He destroyed old growth forest with trees that were hundreds of years old. His act destroyed hundreds of homes and wrecked the livelyhoods of many.

He needs to be made an example of. He needs to spend the rest of his life working towards repairing the damage he has caused.

No, he was playing with fireworks in a heavily wooded area on a trail with some friends. His fireworks started a fire, and him and his friends ran off laughing about it. Some lady caught him and called the cops. The stupid kids made a video of him doing it and laughing about it.

He likely didn't intend to start a fire, but if he had simply followed the laws the fire would have never started.

Just in case something crazy happens if he wins the lottery or something before 10 years passes, they get to go "Oh you won the lottery eh?" "Cool let's just take all that money from you.". Obviously if he is making 30-40k a year at best for 10 years then he won't get close to paying it back.

This sounds reasonable. The amount is a reflection of just how much damage he caused, which means it's not at all unreasonable to be laying it on him, but offering him the opportunity to be forgiven if he does enough to repent is probably the best way to go about it. Keeping him destitute forever wouldn't come close to ever covering the damages, so it's not like there's much point in that.

I guess he's going to have to live with his parent until he's at least 25. I mean, for some, it's hard to make enough money to live somewhat comfortably as it is. And he's got to work to pay that off and do a bunch of community service. And he can't miss payments or it could last for the rest of his life. And at that point, he might try to kill himself, possibly. I mean, I might if I had to pay something for the rest of my life that I knew I couldn't pay. And he can't even keep any money from the lottery. Well, the things you do have consequences. I guess that gave him that impossible price tag to get as much money as they can. Like any tax returns and lottery winnings.

Also, the pictures are kind cool looking...

While I certainly empathize with you, he's only 15 and almost certainly didn't intend to do anything like that. He deserves some punishment for his reckless and irresponsible behavior, but making him warden of the forest and imprisoning him there until everything regrows seems well... crazy.

Of course he didn't mean to burn down the forest. But his stupid actions were what made it happen. If the teenager were randomly shooting a gun in a crowded nightclub and accidentally killed everyone, he wouldn't get any leniency because he had an ooopsie
