Heard Yanny at first and was somewhat convinced that this must be some kind of troll, but after playing it a bunch of times at different volumes I was able to get it to sound like Laurel. Pretty cool.

I've never heard yanny. I've tried it on my phone and on my laptop. It's always Laurel

So its almost like yanmy because I think yanny would have different consonance emphasis which is what gives this away in being not fair

Also Ive listened to this on different set ups and always get yanmy

Some people can hear "Yanny"/"Yammy" because there's also a voice saying that in the clip

I tried different volumes and never hear anything but short a and long e sounds but it sounds more like "yammy" or "ya-wee"

It sounds like yanny to me literally every time in this explanation video, even when they remove the interference. Listening to it on my stereo in 5.1 too, not a cell phone.

Then, i listened to the 20% sped up version and it was very clearly 'laurel'

Now, all of a sudden, i only hear a lower pitched 'laurel ' in the og video

It sounds completely different

What a stupid video. Guy clearly hasn't ever heard the Yanny since he says "now this clearly says Laurel" after he "isolates the sound" but as someone who hears Yanny every time no it does not.

but now that I heard it sped up

and now that I'm going back to it

its a deep voiced person saying "Laurel" now

Once your ears hear what it really is and know what to listen for/what not to focus on, you're more likely to hear it

I don't know the science behind it

but I have overwatch up right now

it says Yammy

but when the overwatch background ambience music starts playing on the main menu, it says Laurel

I tested it 5 times

then I turned off overwatch

and now its saying Yammy again

eh?

It's interesting because while scientists have been able to pinpoint that it's Laurel because the sound signatures for the two ls and the r are definitely there, they have yet to actually come up with an explanation for how it becomes Yanny other than "Uh the recording is bad?"

This video is much better than the one Xuxon linked cause he actually isolates it properly.

If you can't hear Laurel, go to 2:16, play it at half speed

I can 100% hear Laurel if I do that. And now having done that once I can actually hear it "correctly" at any speed

Still usually hear Yanny though in the original clip/the top half of the signal at any speed. But anyone who can't hear laurel (or yanny, probably, just go to the point a little after where he highlights the top) should try that.

Yea its probably got to do with the different frequencies on whats available or even good, one person's speakers are different than others

like I said, it sounds different depending on what else I have playing

Yeah probably. Like I bet the thing you were saying with the Overwatch literally was your speakers inclining towards the lower frequencies with that music playing for some reason.

Or it could just be what your head is tuning to too. Probably a little of both. Speakers and brains are weird, man.

maybe yall should test it and see if you hear different things depending on if its playing?

EDIT: but then again, maybe the version playing from the game itself outputs differently than what plays on youtube

so it might not be accurate anyways

I can't hear Yanny, no matter how hard I try. I seem to have lost the upper register of my hearing (can't hear Teen Buzz anymore).

I've reached enlightenment.

I can actually hear both of them in the same sound bite now. It's like... Yaurel.

Having heard each side once really helps because you can repeat how it sounds in your head while listening to it.

And yeah the speaker definitely matters. Headphones on it's hard not to just hear laurel now. Speakers were what I was originally listening on, which was Yanny at first, but now I can hear Yaurel. I think Yanny starts playing just before Laurel in the clip because I can't hear it the other way.

I'd imagine if you're more sensitive to higher frequencies or have speakers that are such you're more likely to hear Yanny because it starts a hair beforehand. But Laurel dominates more of the sound space in the clip I think because yeah when I hear both it's mostly Laurel. But who knows maybe that's just a trick of the mind too.

I think Yanny sounds cooler though it kinda sucks that I hear more Laurel now.
