I'm guessing it'll be like a China situation? North will stay communist and South will stay capitalist but they will support each other?

I think the South's citizens are annoyed enough by NK that they won't accept anything less than total capitalist rule. If true, I don't blame them.

Of course they do. I thought a united Korea under southern rule was what the world had been fighting for since the 60s.

Who cares about economics? People are suffering and they have a right to freedom.

And one thing I found amazing about this whole thing was when Kim Jong-un admitted "We are the same people" when referring to Koreans. That's a major step forward for peace and understanding.

you really think that jingoist piece of human trash is going to step down as dictator? if he does not maintain the status quo there, he is fucking gone and so is his family. he knows this.

the entire north korean crisis is so far flung and fucked up that there is no simple solution that is going to cause less suffering than there is now.

even if we do manage to unseat the kim family without triggering a conflict with china the problem of not just caring for the people there, but reprogramming them from generations of brainwashing is not exactly a task that south korea is currently capable of.

yeah, but youve got to add the caveat of Mexico making nuclear threats toward the US and its allies and causing even more suffering among its citizens than Mexico currently does.

the US wants it insofar as we want to be able to have troops on china's border.

we would be MUCH happier to let china take it, along with the financial burden, since at that point we already would have troops on their border.

pedantic as always adjl, but ill gladly clarify for you since you clearly need educating

refugee
refyooj/
noun
noun: refugee; plural noun: refugees

a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.

since, in this farfetched scenario, the north korean government either collapses, or joins with SK, these people are not "forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster."

they will be staying exactly where they are, and suffering exactly as they have been. starvation, dehydration, exposure and worse.

ok peanut? we all learned something today.

Yeah, reunification is not happening any time soon. The countries are just too different and there's no way the two governments will come to an agreement on how the one, unified country would be governed. My hope is that in the near future SK/China/US give aid to NK and try to build it into a not totally shitty place to live. But doing that probably means that NK would need to acknowledge how shit it is to actually live there in the first place.

Unification isn't that popular as an issue anymore, either in the North or in the South. It has been this way for so long that it's normal now. Very few think of Korea as something that is whole anymore.

Honestly by abandoning nuclear weapons, that would go a long way to keeping North Korea shitty. Since if they had nukes, the assumption would be that they could then disband most of their expensive conventional military.

That'd require a war be fought. Peaceful reunification equals the Kim family keeping their wealth. The best realistic outcome is him implementing reforms in the north that will not implode Korea, and slowly result in one state dominated by the south.

Korea saw a much harsher divide than Germany, and almost 30 years after their reunification there are still issues...
