Liquid was abused by Big Boss in MGS1's plot, which was why he so strongly despised him. He had a deep caring for his men and hated the world that rejected him. In MGSV "lol he was just always evil I guess" Same kind of characterization change happens for a number of people. Ocelot is unrecognizable, seriously he could have been replaced in the plot with the Drill Instructor from PW and you wouldn't know the difference. His snear and snark are gone, his torture fetish is gone. Along with that Ocelot worked alongside Sergei Gurlukavich in the Soviet-Afghan war for MGS2, that doesn't happen here. Strangelove lost her character development in Peace Walker. Big Boss hated the ideas of clones or duplication, it's the reason he left the Patriots. But then lol he randomly decides to do it. And the reason people followed him was that despite being evil in the 90's was that he was extremely caring and loved his men, but he abandons them here. Completely contradicting that essential piece if his character. Zero and Big Boss are retconned to just be friends and never fought each other at all. The Cobra unit being retconned to get their powers from vocal cord parasites, and Big Boss was actually a pathetic loser who needed FOX's resident janitor to help him during Snake Eater. Venom as a whole is terrible and only creates more issues in continuity cluttering everything up for literally no reason. His actual "reasoning" is "Big Boss needed to build his military base in secret, so as a diversion he sent his clone to make a military base" like what? The proxy wars between BB and Cipher no have no place in continuity and make no sense. Big Boss having scars visible from his battle from MG1 in MG2, also is a huge issue especially when Big Boss specifically mentions fighting Snake and losing. And while not continuity related by biggest problem with the game. It completely blows away the theme, and the great ending of MGS2 for a cheap and lame nod to fans that devalues everything.
