if you're gay let's assume they're heterophobic

assume youve reasoned with them but they still disagree for whatever reason

Well, heterophobic people do exist, don't they? Hating straight white men is really in nowadays.

I would ask them why and depending on the reason we might be able to work it out.

But I kinddddd of doubt any reason would be satisfactory.

They do, but that's outside the topic's question.

Yeah I don't think so

homophobia typically suggests a general "I'm inherently better than these people" attitude, same as things like racism, which is a dealbreaker

I'd try to work it out with him, try to understand why he's heterophobic, and try to get him to cease the bigotry.

It would be really weird, though, considering he's bi so he likes girls, too, which gives him something in common with straight guys.

If he was persistent in his hate and didn't want to let it go, though, yeah, it'd be a dealbreaker entirely.

So, uh, both options simultaneously.

That being said, heterophobia results in people being offended, homophobia results in people getting killed, so while it doesn't justify heterophobia, it's a bit silly when the results show that homophobia is ultimately worse than heterophobia. After all, parents don't kick their kids out, or send them to "conversion" camps that will torture them physically and mentally simply for being straight.

who says you can't be in a homosexual relationship with a homophobe

Very good point - gay people (and bi people) can be homophobic. Internalized homophobia is very much a real thing.

Especially the "I'm not like those OTHER gays" types that look down on the majority of the others for one reason or another.

There's also those church preachers that preach family values and then have dalliances with men in secret.

In that case, yeah, it'd still be a dealbreaker.

There are many different degrees of "homophobia."

My gf, for example, is a practicing Catholic and more or less "isn't sure" if she believes in gay marriage, but she's never spoken insultingly towards gay people or homosexuality. So it's not something we ever fight about even if I may be more progressive on the issue.

Now if someone was like "burn the gays," yeah that wouldn't work.

Kind of a dumb hypothetical cause I doubt people who are voting yes would have that person as a s/o to begin with.

Like it probably would be but not because it'd be an auto dealbreaker as much as the type of person that would be a homophobe is probably going to be incompatible with me anyway. Like I'm just not going to get along with the personality of someone who is judging people for stuff like that-- particularly when you consider your stereotypical person who you'd identify as a homophobe is pretty open about the hate.

But like, in a hypothetical situation assuming we're otherwise very compatible and then I'm told in confidence at some point "hey I've kept this a secret all this time but I just can't handle gay people" uhhh, whatever, as long as they're not being openly hateful that's all you can really ask. Like at that point you're sort of at this weird place where I wouldn't consider the homophobia something inherently wrong from a personality perspective, just a hateful outlook that's been burned into them somehow that they're trying to work around for society's sake. Judging them entirely for that isn't too far off from judging people for their sexuality.

Depends. If they insist on being a bigot, then yes, it's a dealbreaker. If they're more open-minded and, with the right prodding, can realize that others' sexuality has almost no bearing on them - just who they can date - then it's not.
