17. Been applying for jobs, but nobody's accepted me yet. There's a much wider range of employers that will take me once i'm 18, though.

Do what makes you happy. That's what life is about.

I mean, ask a teenager between "hey, get a job and learn life lessons. Or sit around and play guitar and video games all day", the teenager is not going to choose the delayed gratification. Should we let a 5 year old eat ice cream for dinner every day? It would make them happy, after all.

That's fair, but I meant more in terms of adults not having jobs. Presumably at that point in their lives, most people would have already had at least one job anyway.

CE arguging dicking around with hobbies over learning life lessons? I mean it doesn't surprise me. But it's interesting to see the defense force as no one advocating a secular job is saying it's an either or situation.

I mean depending on the hobby if you are truly invested in it and take it a little seriously, they can certainly be life lessons as well. Its all about what you learn from the experience and how you use it to better yourself. Not everyone is "dicking around" playing a sport or learning an instrument.

farm work for your family or work where you got paid under the table because you were legally too young to work, doesn't count.

what if you got paid under the table for other reasons?

When I was 13 or 14, I started mowing lawns and shoveling snow for neighbors. I did that for years and when I was 18, I worked with my neighbor a few times who did a bunch of random stuff like cleaning out old houses or painting rooms and stuff like that. I didn't get my first real, over the table job until I was 19, I was a stocker at a Lowes.

Unoffical - 12 - helping my grandpa dig trenches and install septic tanks

Official - 15 (maybe 14) - Working at a local mom and pop gas station. A love/hate relationship with that job for sure. I was by far the one who did the most work so the owners would always depend on me for everything. That kinda sucked, but to have such responsibility at that age was kinda cool and aside from the occasional asshole customer it was a pretty enjoyable job

Having started work so young really separated my habits and skills from my peers.

Kids need to be working much younger. I see kids who are all the way at the end of their teen years who can't even cut a pizza lol. It's sad.

I didn't start working til I was 20 lol
