I was interested in playing through the game, possibly even making a playthrough topic. Just curious what the standout aspect of this game is supposed to be, though it still interests me either way.

It's charming. Plus, Bowser's on your team, which is neat.

There's also some good humor sprinkled in.

That's what seems to be the case with this game overall. I've never really heard anyone outright hate on the game, but it's not really the fan-favorite Mario RPG. Just the most popular perhaps.

Music and script are both stand out.

Very easy rpg, but it's fun. World has a lot of variety and interesting things to hunt for and easter eggs to discover.

How do you beat Croco 1 without timed hits?

It just seems he does such absurd damage to you that it's a race to put him down.

Mario Jumped and mallow defended unless he was healing mario or FP for more jumps.

To be clear when I said I was doing it kind of a low leveled it's not in a disciplined way or anything. Just not killing every enemy in sight like I normally. I'm at Belome 2 around level 11, and it's the first boss that I actually couldn't beat after two or three tries because he just spams party-wide sleep spells (decided not to use accessories because it felt too cheap at first but now it feels cheap for the boss!)

Its a fine game and Mario actually has some shred of character via his over the top expressions. Bowser is good in it too like the other RPGs.

The best Mario game ever, and the only travesty of the Best Game Ever 2015 contest was that it lost to Ocarina of Time.

It's good. The battle system is fun and it's probably my favorite RPG on the SNES in that regard, but it's really easy. The music is great. I don't like some of the characters Square created for it, most notably Geno. The graphics are nice and overall world building is decent enough, but the humor is especially where it shines.

Definitely in "must play" territory for the SNES.

It's fine. Doesn't really stand out to me in the grand scheme of the SNES library though. Lots of better RPGs. Lots of better Mario games.

It's great in just about every way.

The battle system is simple, but fun.

The music is catchy and excellent.

The writing is witty as hell.

The graphics hold up impressively well.

Dodo 3?

Megasmilax is set to use Petal Blast every 3 turns. Every time you get hit by it, the status counter resets. It can miss but the attack is pretty accurate. If you don't have status protection, your entire party gets turned into Mushrooms forever.

I thought it was him too, but Belome 2 was already mentioned so I didn't think it would be something before him. (Belome 2 wouod have been my second guess).

The reason I said Dodo 3 was I thought with no equipment and him silencing you that it couod make it virtually impossible for anyone to survive long enough not Bowser for the one on one fight.

Megasmilax is actually after Belome 2. Unfortunately, I don't recall what my Dodo 3 fight was like without equipment or items so I'm not really sure how hard it was. Keep in mind I could level up as much as I want so it's possible I overlevelled to make up for the lack of equipment. Actually, I think I probably had to level up a lot to overpower Megasmilax so I must have still been overlevelled by the time I fought Dodo.

A pretty fun game, though lacking in difficulty.

It's kind of set up to be "babby's first RPG", but it has a lot of humor and charm put into it that makes it very enjoyable.

If you overleveled to compensate for no items, I assume you would spam Snowy as much as possible since he's weak to ice (at least until you run out of FP).

An excellent game, with tons of charm and gameplay that feels really good. Probably one of the best single player experiences I've ever had, and I've replayed it a bunch of times.

I've never felt like Paper Mario measured up to it at all.

Yeah, you can even see him get slightly annoyed or impatient with people too sometimes. Working at the Marrymore inn is amazing.

So did you power level for Belome 2 then or just get lucky?

He does have a physical attack, but it's pretty damn rare and about as useful as hoping the sleep spells miss. He doesn't even do it every three turns, he does it every turn!

I guess the clones can wake you up too, but more often than not the character is also dead by the time that happens.

Opposite for me. Think the battle system is pretty terrible with its impossible to know timing for defense (magic attacks especially)and borderline nonexistant damage increase on Mario's timed jumps, but everything else save the isometric platforming and battle music to be top notch.

At what age did you first play each? I'm curious because I love SMRPG but have tried PM a few times and always quit because I get bored early on.

Both Masterpieces, both better than almost all Mario Platformers.

9 and 13 respectively.

I'm exactly the same way with the first Paper Mario, but I will say that TTYD is a damn masterpiece.

It's an overrated game but it's not bad because of that - it's actually a pretty good game!

However, like a lot of really good games out there, people become so attached to them that they tend to overhype them to other people, and game forums tend to attract either people who *REALLY HATE THE GAME* and are determined to make sure everyone agrees with them, or the people who are really attached to the game. And then, they overhype it to each other so much that they become the people who *REALLY LOVE THE GAME* and are determine to make sure everyone agrees with them.

I will say I'm not the biggest fan of the visual style though.
