By the way if you're thinking my favorites look weirdly skewed towards recent stuff, you're right. Basically whenever I run into something I love I add it to my favorites, even if it's not as good as my real favorites. The reason I started doing this is that I noticed I hadn't changed anything in my favorites in a couple years, and I didn't want to get stuck on the idea of old series being better than new ones because of their placements on a list.

BBB&B was better than season 1, but I do think it suffered a bit by not having a throughline plot.

Thank you to everyone who befriended me on MAL. Seeing that some of you having finished several hundred anime makes my current goal of finishing a hundred by the end of this season seem paltry, but I'm going to keep at it!

Speaking of, I've started Flying Witch just to try another anime from the iyashikei genre. I'm certainly enjoying it (Makoto being bad at directions has been a consistently fun joke), but so far this doesn't seem as special as either Girls' Last Tour or Yuru Camp. That actually makes me kind of glad, though! It means those two really are great anime (at least to me), I'm not just a total sucker for the genre.

My state picked Death March apparently

Ya ya Georgia with FRANXX.

I have never heard a single person even bring up Death March, but it's like #7 in overall Crunchyroll popularity right now and #1 in a bunch of these states. The first episode was awful and the idea seemed bad, so I wonder what's up? Issekai just that powerful a pull?

Four episodes in and I'm still waiting for FranXX to explain a single thing about the setting or the conflict (surely the sex references won't be the only focus of the story, right?). I feel like they'll finally get there next episode but if they don't I might drop the anime just so I'm not in here being negative about it every week. It's hard for anything these characters are doing to have weight when I don't know what the enemy they're fighting even is.

Finished reading Fire Punch. This was quite the series. I really liked how much it changed as it went along. Basically every arc feels like a totally different series than the previous ones, and they're all done well, except for the start. I didn't hate the first ten chapters like LtM did, but they were definitely note executed particularly well. I also liked how the series basically constantly subverts your expectations as well. Even early on, you expect it to be something like Fist of the North Star or Lone Wolf and Cub where the MC goes around killing bad guys and saving people in an episodic adventure, but he basically does that like once before the series changes gears. I always thought Agni was a pretty good protagonist too. Even when he's not doing very nice things, the author really gets you inside of his head so you can totally see where he's coming from. Nothing he does really feels like an asspull, despite how much he changes throughout the manga. After the first few chapters I always enjoyed him. Of course, the real star of the series was Togata. She's really heavily focused on for 20 chapters or so, and those are the best parts of the series. 10/10 material. I just love how crazy the series is in that section. Probably the best twist on almost anything I've read. Cool manga overall.

I feel like S2 just crushed S1 of Konosuba, like S1 was incredible but it wasn't even a competition, especially after S1 ended on kind of a weak note. The last stretch of 4 or so episodes of S2 are some of the best comedy I've ever seen. It did have the weakest episode in the series which was Darkness possession, but other than that it was all winners.

Different strokes I guess.

Just remembered another great comedy show that will probably never get a S2. Sabagebu. That was a good show. Wish Sket Dance anime could come back and finish the manga too. It honestly kinda sucks when an anime covers like 90% of a manga and when the manga ends the anime never comes back to finish the material....the fact this happens for even Jump series is sad :(

Anyone have any recommendations for a manga to read next?

Anyway, a bit more thoughts about FranXX now that I'm bored at work. I feel like I poisoned myself on it from the beginning by expecting things it never set out to deliver. The only other mecha anime I've seen is Knights of Sidonia and it did an excellent job of outlining the conflict and setting right away. I always knew the stakes so it all felt like it mattered. FranXX, by comparison, has laser-focused on whether or not the main character will be allowed to work his mecha-boner. Everyone potentially dying is greeted with mild reactions at best while who rides who is given all the dramatic tension. I've kept waiting for them to move on from that, but maybe the problem is with me expecting more in the first place. I dunno. I should probably watch more mecha anime just so I have a better understanding of the genre.

honestly, mecha is more of a setting than it is a genre if that helps

If FranXXX was made by Haoliners or something then yea drop that but at least give Trigger a shot to the halfway point

Watching four episodes is definitely giving it a shot. I watch one episode of a show and then drop it all the time. Stuff getting explained earlier doesn't make bad early episodes good. If it happens to turn great later on he can always pick it back up for that.

TTGL was fantastic from episode one.

I feel like almost every Gainax show Ive seen has been that was pretty good...until the last 1-3 episodes were terrible. I still rated that stuff somewhat high even then though.
