It's not new paintings in the sense that they start from scratch on a different canvas. The movie is like a living painting. As the frames move, you can see the brush strokes painting over top of the stuff. It's quite a watch.

ah ok. yeah that sounds really interesting as a visual spectacle. not sure it could hold ones attention well as a feature but maybe....

Yeah, I'd say The Exorcist was the first "true" horror movie to be nominated. Rebecca was, by Hitchcock in 1941, but it's honestly more of a drama than a thriller.

EDIT - actually, A Clockwork Orange was nominated in '72, if you want to go with that.

Blade Runner 2049 got ignored for Best Picture as expected.

Everyone was talking about how it was going to be a nominee when it first released but then it didn't do well at the box office and apparently that killed it for everyone for some reason.

It's my favorite film of the year so for what seems like a trivial thing to kill its Oscar potential simply baffles me.

Yeah the Academy has no idea what they're doing in regards to animation. There were a bunch of great anime films this year like A Silent Voice but lol at non Ghibli anime films being nominated.

Solid nominees outside of those complaints though.

Like that was one of the big revelation movies of the year. Nobody expected that to be good and it was pretty much the resurrection of a lot of old cinematography values in the form of a lovely sequel. It kind of amazes me it got so little respect in these noms.

Like that was one of the big revelation movies of the year. Nobody expected that to be good and it was pretty much the resurrection of a lot of old cinematography values in the form of a lovely sequel. It kind of amazes me it got so little respect in these noms.

No one expected it to be good? The director has had one of the most consistently strong careers over the last decade, and Arrival did phenomenally last year.

No one expected it to be good? The director has had one of the most consistently strong careers over the last decade, and Arrival did phenomenally last year.

Yeah, and everybody still expected it to be a cashgrab sequel. Like...people respected Denis Villeneuve, but the trailers didn't exactly inspire a lot of hope. It being as good as it was was a very welcome surprise.

But I just can't help it, Dunkirk was terrible and seeing it get a oscar nomination hurts me

Probably with indifference. I see Academy Award nominations as recommendations for movies I might have missed over the course of the year. Just like anyone recommending movies, my tastes may not be in league with those recommending films. For example, people often complain that Taxi Driver did not win the Academy Award over Rocky, but I prefer three of the Best Picture nominees that year to Taxi Driver. That's not an indictment on the film, that's a matter of personal preference. I found The Deer Hunter to be a painfully dull movie; many consider it a classic. My goal is to understand what motivates people to enjoy a film so I can be more well-rounded as I venture out on my own writing experience.

I don't think Dunkirk is a bad movie, it's clearly very successful at what it wanted to do. For me, the only thing keeping me from falling asleep was the explosions.

That's a civil case. In the US, there are criminal and civil cases. Criminal cases are protected by the Constitution, whereas civil suits require far less burden of proof, hence the commonality of settlements.

Yes I am sure Dunkirk is absolutely comparable to Assassin's Creed. Whether or not it was your cup of tea it was an incredible technical achievement and absolutely deserves the awards.

Of course I don't think it'll get that many. Score is a lock, Editing is likely (but Baby Driver will be tough to beat) but it will have a hard time getting the others. Stiff competition this year. Director in particular is an insane category this year. Villeneuve, Scott, Guadagnino and Baker all didn't make it but it's hard to look at the 5 we have and replace any of them.

As much as I love Get Out I feel like Kaluya didn't really deserve the nom. Like his performance isn't what stood out about it for me

I liked him more in it than I usually like best actor noms for stuff

but I really liked Kaluuya

it was really fucking good

I know it could never win but it should have taken one of the "weird animated foreign film that nobody watched" slots
