Yeah, it was the $108k from the subs that ultimately pushed it over.

I believe they do still accept donations for some time even after the event closes. Although, I'm not really sure how long.

- battletoads. i'm biased because i love seeing TMR run this game but yeah. terrible start but other than that it was a good run. unfortunately no big jon on the couch this time but PJ is great too. also, it ends with TMR finally succeeding at doing turbo tunnel blindfolded at a GDQ.
- dragon warrior. very impressive run and i love nescardinality.
- hollow knight. was a pretty cool run with good commentary from the runner.

other good ones:
- the athena race. i don't even like races but the banter between the two runners and the couch guys was pretty funny.
- star wars: jedi knight - jedi academy. it was just fun to see how super excited the runner was throughout the whole run.

of course there was a lot more but i still need to catch up on most of the runs.

The Awful block in general is always a fun watch and I still haven't gotten to a lot of them, but Athena, Enviro-Bear 2000, Arabian Knights, and Titenic in particular were great.

LttP Randomizer, both for the race and because Patty is hilarious.

Super Dram World 2, but I actually watch GrandPooBear normally so I may be biased.

I'm slowly watching (as in it will take months) the AGDQ videos.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy - Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped - Any%
8.5/10
Pretty enjoyable first game, technique was well explained and the commentary was well done.

Ratchet & Clank - NG+
7.0/10
It's pretty amazing to see how much time NG+ has been cut since the last time I watched it.

Splatoon 2 - Any%
7.5/10
Quite fun to watch, commentary was good though some of the complaints about certain levels/items was a bit much. Execution could have been a bit better.

inFAMOUS First Light - Any%
6.0/10
The game was well played. The commentary while insightful felt a bit dry, the couch was almost non-existent.

I'll continue to post my thoughts as I watch until this topic fills up/gets closed

what are the best runs to watch?

zallard1 (the blindfolded super punch out guy from a few years ago) beat Mike Tyson's Punch Out (NES) and Super Punch Out (SNES) at the same time with one controller.

Skyrim was a great example of a run going totally off the rails in the most enjoyable way possible.

Silent Hill had enjoyable commentary

Diablo level 1 Sorcerer run was neato and the runner was awesome. There are glitches but no skips done, and Diablo is the only enemy killed in the run

Superman 64 was beautifully, incredibly awful and amazing. Also was a world record run.

Off topic-ish: last night I crushed the Joe & Mac (SNES) WR by 30 seconds

I only caught the end of Bloodborne, but what I caught was a great example of how to stay entertaining when things go wrong. Soulsborne runners in particular should not do marathon events if they can't handle it in stride like that guy.

It should be noted that it's in a category that wasn't possible until a few weeks ago (which is explained in the run).

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Main Quest
6.0/10
A lot went wrong, some of it slowed the game to a crawl as he had to repeat the same thing over and over while others made it more interesting. I understand some of these tricks are hard to pull off, but I always feel categories with a low execution rate shouldn't be in a marathon setting. This was almost double the world record time yet just barely went over estimate meaning the runner knew things would have likely gone south.

Hollow Knight - Any% No Storage OOB
7.5/10
This run shows that you don't need a couch crew to be effective. The runner was very good at articulating the various tricks used in the run and they were mostly well executed.

F-Zero GX - All Tracks Time Attack (Max Speed)
7.0/10
They did a good job at explaining the mechanics used in the speedrun. Some skips looked crazy and amazing. While mistakes were expected it did kill a lot of momentum to start the race over, especially if they were done during the third lap. By this point the commentators were done talking about the race so it was mostly silent or random talking during those segments. In hindsight I guess they could have asked for donations to be read out.

I wonder...is there no prior conversation between the runner and the host/organization of when is the best times for donations?

I know often times the runner does a good job of letting them know and is very prepared. And sometimes in a dead moment the host will chime in "hey, is this a good time?"

But like why not have a briefing beforehand.

There's a lot of games being ran and the host is usually busy reading donations during the changeover so they don't exactly have time.

Also from past GDQs the hosts have taken a lot of heat for reading donations during what was about to be a tough segment so they mostly stay silent until the runner tells them to read out donations.

I think you missed my point. How long is the schedule set in stone prior to the event?

Surely there is ample time for the runner to say "hey by the way here are the times that are good for donations, also if I fuck up on 3rd lap of a 3 lap race after it's all been explained, go for it".

like...months in advance?

The level of effort you're asking for does not anywhere near equate to the amount of return they'd get for it versus how it works currently.

yeah, there's no reason for preparation when the runner almost always specifies during the run when it's a good time to read donations. the only problem is that donation readers still read off donations WITHOUT asking for the runner's permission plenty of times. as i said before, that's stupid because you never know if the runner has to concentrate on a difficult trick or whatever. i don't think this AGDQ there was anything as disastrous as when during SGDQ '16 a reader ruined a blindfolded section of a run by rattling off a donation, but it's something that shouldn't happen regardless.

I think you're overestimating the amount of effort. The burden is mainly on the runners of each game, which is basically negligible. I don't know what the exact application process is like, but all it would take is a free form text box where the runner puts some notes - as in a couple sentences - pointing out good times for donations. Then they put those notes next to the game on the schedule so that anyone who happens to be hosting can see them.

It's close to no effort whatsoever.

Yeah which basically gets at the root of my thoughts as well. It comes down to generally improving the runners' awareness that they're performing (so to speak) in a way that's different from just their personal stream. And so there's more things to consider.

As was said by someone, most runs it isn't an issue. But it's an issue that could be mostly resolved with a trivial amount of effort.
