Board 8 > I need help from someone who knows about dyeing hair.

So I tried to dye my hair. I followed the instructions on the little slip of paper the box came with, but I obviously screwed it up somehow. My hair is now colored at random intervals varying shades between dark brown (my natural color) and kind of a red-blond (I chose a pure blond dye).

What should I do to fix this?

Going dark brown to blonde is a pretty big change, probably didn't use enough dye or something. If you do it again it'll probably work. Best solution is to go to a salon though

Give at least 2 weeks if your hairdye has bleach in it. Then, I dunno, follow the steps below... Usually the method I use is pretty foolproof...

If you're worried, then you should get it done at a salon....

1) Depending on the thickness of your hair, you need at least two boxes of dye if you're doing it yourself, for even distribution.

2) Section hair into four parts. Using a brush or your hands, rub the dye into the hairline and roots first.

3) Then, massage the dye into the hair from the bottom sections, then comb it with a wide toothed brush for even distribution.

4) Once the whole head is covered, gently massage the whole of your head for a few minutes

5) Put a plastic bag over the hair, and leave it on for the dye's recommended wait time.

6) Wash. Condition. If you have aloe vera hair spray, even better.

Also, if you're going brown to blond... that just... isn't gonna happen with a box dye... You need to bleach your hair first. The most I've gone with jet black hair is black to dark brown to light brown to some weird dark orange... before going to dark red.

Gotta go with the pros....

This. I bleached my hair a lot back in the day and a lot of damage could have been prevented if I had gone to a salon routinely. Box dye is not good for your hair.

I've been using a decent brand called Liese. It's a Japanese brand, so I don't know if it is available outside of Asia. It's pretty gentle, and the dye itself is like a bubble shampoo. My hair barely gets damaged by the peroxide, though the smell is super strong, to the point where it stings my eyes at first.

I don't know much about Japanese brands! That's really interesting to know. Are you aiming for ganguro style? It's a cool style. I used to be really in to Lolita and the like, but it's very expensive in America lol

I have a lot of friends who work in Salons in the US who say that trying to dye over box dye from America is bad news and occasionally mixing professional dye and box dye can really mess your hair up if you don't let the colorist know.

I love that I knew exactly what the issue would be before I read the topic.

Trying to dye your hair a lighter colour without bleaching first is like getting out a piece of black paper and trying to draw on it with a coloured felt tip.

No, the colour isn't going to show up on it properly.
