I had high expectations because of the quality of the year and the length of the deliberations, but this was a pretty dissapointing set of GotY podcasts overall, other than a couple of notable moments.

I think they got tired by the end of it. I was hoping for a big old-fashioned Jeff tirade, but he just kinda rolls over and dies during the last 5 hours.

My big issue is that it seems like each member played maybe 30% of the games involved, and of the ones they played they maybe finished half at most.

Made every day sound the same. People repeated themselves constantly.

Other than that, I feel good with the actual games on the list except Destiny, but that's less about my dislike for it and more about a lack of interest. Every year, there's been a game that I've actively hated that has made the list, and generally atleast a few that I don't care about, but I could see myself at least checking out just about every game on this list. Potentially even Dream Daddy.

I want to go play the top 9 games on this list right now, which is something I can't say for any of the other top 10 lists Giantbomb has put out.

I will say that if I never hear that something is very good again in my life, it'll still be too soon.

I have to say, Alex was right. The response to Nier's combat got massively overblown. To say "it's a bad video game" seems to be massively exaggerating the flaws with the gameplay.

I had to quit Nier my third playthrough because I got too fed up with the combat, and I just read up the plot summary instead. I died and lost something like half an hour of progress and decided I didn't care enough to continue.I like everything about that game except the part where you play it.

I enjoyed the combat overall. I even played most of the game on Hard. I especially liked the customization system and being able to add Bayonetta witch time or MGR styled parrying.

I think some of the rest of the staff might have gotten Abby overly hyped about the GotY stuff the way they talked about it, causing her to be overly aggressive in certain points. I didnt mind her nearly as much as most people, but would like to see her expand her arguments a bit better next time.

I might be exaggerating the frequency he did this, but I think he is the very reason Dream Daddy did as well as it did throughout deliberations.

MVP was definitely Alex. His arguments for Nier were delightful and helped me understand how I felt about that game better. More on that in the second half of this post. It also helped me realise that not only did it have the best story of the year but it also had the best story in a video game. I also felt Dan really brought it in the last day. He must have been saving his energy in the first four!

Anyway, I have more to say about their Nier discussion. I am totally on board with Alex about feeling "seen" by this game. It discusses things that not only do video games not discuss, but media does not discuss and arguably even discourages. It talks about existential issues and nihilism (ACTUAL nihilism, not what people often think nihilism is) in a way that ultimately gives a really positive and important message. This will be an incredibly important game. It would be my game of the year in a regular year that didn't have Zelda and Mario. I think every one of the top 5 are going to be really important, though as a multiplayer game I believe PUBG's will be fleeting.

Also there's a scene in which a character calls Friedrich Nietzche a moron and that's hilarious.
