From what I've seen, most of the people "exposed" so far apparently had tons of rumors about them for years, people keep saying these were "open secrets".

I don't know anything about Tom Hanks. But at least, if you haven't heard anything yet, that's a sign that you'll probably be fine...for now...?

This is why I don't pay attention to celebrity rumors or bullshit. I don't really care what they do in their personal life because I don't know them personally. It's their life, let them live it. Famous people are still people, they make mistakes. Sucks for them that their mistakes have spotlights shone on them for everyone to see.

That's not my point, and anyway as far as I've seen, it never actually gets to that point. Showing your dick to girls without consent is definitely bad, but it's not rape.

Regardless, my point is that we should separate the celebrity from the work they do. If you enjoy an actor or musician, then you shouldn't stop liking their work just because of the mistakes or stupid shit they do in their personal lives.

Well I get that, and there's plenty of celebrities who I like as a person as well, but that wouldn't stop me from enjoying their work if they end up doing some stupid shit in their life at some point.

Like, a lot of projects that Louie was in are cancelled now because of this. Now because of this, he's not longer funny, no longer has any talent, nobody could possibly enjoy his work now? He's still got everything that people liked about him. But now no one wants to see any of his talent because he made a terrible mistake -- which it was a mistake, he genuinely seems to regret it and it's not difficult to understand why he thought he could get away with it if you look at it from his point of view. Still stupid, yes, and he knows that, but it is slightly understandable.

Dude, if you went through life without any consequences to your actions, eventually you start to forget what you can and can't get away with. He had always been respectful up until that point, where he had power over people he never had before. It's understandable that he'd let that power trick him into thinking he could do something that he should have known was wrong.

Or maybe I'm just giving him the benefit of the doubt here and he's actually just a scumbag. I don't actually know for sure, because I don't know him personally nor do I even care. I'm not even a fan of the guy, I just feel sorry for him that people can't see things from other perspectives.

I think it's strange to say that if a person thinks they can get away with something, that's a defense to do it.

That really doesn't answer any moral question at all, just more of a intelligence one really. If you're only criteria is that bad people do things they KNOW can get caught for, well that's not much of a moral stance at all.

Like, maybe your point is just that many people who are disowning Spacey right now would do the same things as him given the opportunity/power/influence/whatever, which you're probably right for.

But that's a pretty deep moral philosophy question. Not everyone can even BE Hitler, maybe if you were him you would do the same thing? Maybe, but it's weird to not be able to say he's a bad dude because of that.

I wasn't trying to say that, I'm not defending his actions. It was certainly wrong, but he knows that. He's apologized for it now. Which is why I can understand where he was coming from. I'm saying that power can trick your mind into thinking something that's wrong is right. Or at least that there won't be any consequences for doing something you should know is wrong.

It's like being drunk (with power lol), or really really tired. Your judgement in those situations isn't usually the best. You make mistakes. No you probably wouldn't show your dick to some girl without permission (although depending on how drunk you are and what your personality is like, it's definitely a possibility), but I'm sure you can all relate to doing something stupid and regretting it later.

Right now what it looks like you're saying is that celebrities should be held to a lesser standard because their brains work differently because they're popular, and as such we should forgive their actions as long as the apologize.

If that's not what you're saying, you may need to rethink your posts a bit.

Maybe I can explain it this way

For instance, at work I have some amount of power because I'm one of two people who actually know how to do my job. So I can get away with a lot of things others can't. I know it's technically wrong, but I also know I won't get in trouble or face any consequences, so I allow myself to do something that I know is "wrong".

Now, I am just talking about little things like getting free soda/food when we're not really supposed to (but I do what I want), and that's clearly nowhere near the level of wrong we're actually talking about here.

But you have to extrapolate. If you're famous, you can get away with a lot of things regular people can't. That line starts to blur at some point, I'm sure. So it's easy for me to understand how someone like that could think they'd get away with something so wrong. Because to him, at the time, in that moment, in his brain, his mind was telling him, whispering to him that whipping out his dick in front of this chick would be cool and she would be totally into it because you're Louis C.K. and she fucking loves you.

Clearly it was wrong, and he knows that. He always knew that. Even in the moment he knew that. But that particular voice in his head that was telling him to do it anyway was holding the power. He was on top of the world, he'd never faced any consequences for his actions before. Surely this wouldn't come back to bite him. If he knew that it would blow up in his face later on, do you really think he still would've done it?

Again, I may just be giving him the benefit of the doubt and maybe he's actually a scumbag. I just try to see things from other perspectives.

And also, if I'm still failing at the whole "point" thing here, then I'mma just give up now.

It depends on what the celebrity is known for. If it were an athlete, I wouldn't care. What they're able to do on the field is completely independent from whether or not they're likeable. But there's a certain measure of charisma and likeability that goes with being an actor and comedian. So there will be people who won't be able to view a work of his without thinking about how he harassed and exploited women. To take it to an extreme, consider how basically it's very hard to make any kind of reference to Cosby material, and you'll never see it being aired anywhere any more.

Now, on one hand, yes, it seems terrible that all these networks cancelled shows and projects that cost them millions to develop. On the other, they probably weren't going to get their return on it at this point and it was better to cut their losses. Especially when so many people employ an outrage-by-association tactic and blacklist anyone who has contact with someone or something they don't like. (Hi, NFL!)

But it's not really the same.

If you showed your dick to some girl on the street and said "suck my dick", the girl could just say "fuck off" or call the cops. Not really a problem for her, other than the jump scare.

But like...if your literal boss who has the ability to say "you'll never work in this town again" and the connections to make that threat reality...shows you their dick and says "suck my dick". What the hell do you do in that situation? Are you going to lose your entire career that you've dreamed about if you don't? Is it worth it if you get to keep your job? These are things going around in your mind.

Bosses, or effective bosses, should be MORE careful when interacting with their employees than two random friends. (I mean, employees should also be careful when interacting with their bosses, but like...if you're an employee, and you show your boss your dick and say "suck my dick" he or she will just fire your ass so...that situation is easily resolved).

I didn't say it was unimportant. I said I wouldn't care -- in the sense that I wouldn't find it impossible to ever see that person in their sport again. I doubt they would ever have any sponsorships, or engage in any of the things that go with being a public figure, but I wouldn't keep them from their actual career. With the exception of if their infamy actively drives people away from buying tickets, which could happen in an extreme case or if we were talking about an athlete who was the event, like a prize fighter, there's very little reason to keep them from working any more than if this happened in most any other industry.
