This is a good one, but I didn't include any of the RPGs in the poll since Odyssey is a platformer. Just doing platformers here.

Impossible for me to rank
SMG 1 and 2 are both amazing and probably deserve to be considered the best equally
But Mario 64 is such a masterpiece that only gets dragged down in my mind because it gets old
And yet I replayed it more than 5 times getting 120 stars each time and every time I enjoy it more and more

Then you have quite a gap for Super Mario 3D Land and then Sunshine, which I didn't really enjoy (might be emulator fault, need to give this another try but I don't have good memories from this one)

Need to play 3D World

I was thinking about this recently, actually, and what's amazing about SM64 is that, despite being one of the very first 3D platformers ever (I think there might have been something that qualifies before SM64 but I don't remember what), it nailed so many elements of its design perfectly - namely, the movement, and how fun it is to run and jump in its environments. What's really disappointing to me, and really kind of a shame for the 3D platforming genre, is that I don't think any 3D platformer ever improved on this. SM64 still remains the most fun game to just move around in. That includes later Mario games too - Sunshine and Galaxy, while they're still fun, don't feel quite as kinetic, as acrobatic, as free as SM64 - you don't accelerate into your jumps quite as pleasingly, you always feel like you have too much air resistance and drag whenever you try to maneuver in the air, and there's never enough walls to do wall kicks off of. SM64 is really not a perfect game by any means - the level design shows a lot of flaws, plenty of the stars are not really that fun to collect at all and rely on some stupid gimmicks, the worlds in general don't quite live up to being as fun or inventive later in the game as they are early on (the first floor of the castle is magical but it kind of nosedives after that). But it really nailed the movement. I hope Odyssey can kind of get back to what SM64 did so well at least a little, but I think, for some reason, it might never be repeated.

Well, I never had an N64 or GameCube or Wii U, and I only very briefly had a Wii. I do take full responsibility for not playing SM64DS I guess. But in general, platformers have never been my thing.

3D World blows both away at level design!

Can you give examples of why you think Galaxy 2 has better level design? Because I don't remember coming away with that impression, and there are a few glaring counterexamples like SMG1's final level being a beautiful cumulation of the game's gravity mechanics and SMG2's final level being forgettable.

SMG2 is a game I only played once, though, so it's possible I'm underrating it some in this aspect.

Galaxy 1 definitely beat Galaxy 2 in terms of the Bowser levels. I'll give it credit for that. The Perfect Run in Grandmaster Galaxy is one of my favorite things in a Mario game though. So much fun. Galaxy 1's level design revolves around the space gimmick--launch stars, pull stars, gravity switching, and all that stuff. It's probably why it has a more "magical" feel to a lot of people. That's what it's aiming for, and it nails it. Galaxy 2 puts more emphasis on just being a platformer while implementing those things into it. That's part of why Galaxy 1's Bowser levels are better. The atmosphere is out of this world (pun intended) because that's what it's aiming for. Galaxy 2 largely forgoes all that stuff just to give you levels. It's just trying to be a pure platformer, nothing more. It's simplistic but effective. All the space stuff is integral to the experience in Galaxy 1. Galaxy 2 just retains it and works with it, but the game doesn't revolve around it. I can see why people feel like Galaxy 2 is just "more of the same" if you're just looking at it on the surface, but there are definitely different design philosophies. For what it's worth, I'd have been fine with Galaxy 2 simply being more of the same. I don't think it's a bad thing. It's like getting to the end of Galaxy 1, thinking, "Man, I wish I could have more of that," and then voila, there it is!

It's been a while since I've played both so I dunno if I can really give specific examples too much at this point. For what it's worth, I don't think Galaxy 2 is far and away the better game. Both games are two of my favorites out there. They both excel at what they're trying to do, but they're not quite trying to do the same thing.

How do people think the Galaxies are so much better than Sunshine? Last time I tried playing all those games I 100%'d Sunshine in two months whereas I lost interest in both Galaxies quickly (this may be because I played them to death when I was younger admittedly).

When I replayed 64 and Sunshine three years ago, to me it felt like 64 got linear platforming right but design flaws started to show up in regards to the more open objectives. Sunshine fixed up most everything wrong with 64 but ultimately the locales weren't as memorable, and the game showed obvious signs of being rushed.

Also I never had much in the way of camera issues in 64 outside of tight spaces, of which there aren't many (maybe it helped that I was playing Sonic Adventure and Pac-Man World 2, both of which have much worse camera issues, at around the same time). Sunshine did fix that up thankfully.

Because Sunshine isn't a great Platformer, and the Galaxy games are the 2 best designed platformers ever Everything makes sense, they work in gravity and flight in incredible ways. The power ups and the way they are used is astoundingly well done.
