79. VVVVVV Popular Potpourri
Nominated by: th3l3fty Have I heard it before? Certainly Fun fact: this was the first piece nominated, I was well familiar with it, and I knew it wasnt going to go high. So I basically used this as my this is what average feels like song and rated it as 5.5/10. Every other mid-tier song, I basically asked, Is it better than Popular Potpourri? Then I went back and listened and realized I was being a bit too generous. The VVVVVV soundtrack is great. Mashing all the songs together in a very forced medley, a bit less so. It would be one thing if the works fit together, and we actually got the spirit of each piece. Instead, each transition is like an 8-bar drum beat that cant even be called a fill, while weird noises bloop in the background. Meanwhile, each callback to a piece in the game is brief and soulless. The only portion of PP thats really any good is the initial 90 seconds and the spots where that gets called back. PP is also too damn long for its own good. If you listen to it passively, it seems like Im being overly harsh on it, but if you listen to it actively, youre going to be uninspired with its relative lack of creativity and implementation. next: prog --- ... 78. Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls Progressive
Nominated by: xp1337 Have I heard it before? No A few of these pop-punk pieces get nominated each year in VGMC, and Ive never especially excited by thisI dunno what to even call it, so Im going to dub it as Anime Rock. The one thing they all have going for them is their energy. The one thing they all have going against them is the borderline-screechy female vocals they usually open with. Thats obviously a style thing, because the singer(s) in Progressive demonstrate competence, but its just not a style Im enamored with. Truthfully, even when a (mainstream) band I like writes a song that sounds something like this, I usually nix it, so adding those additional complications is enough for me to just be excited to hear it when I need energy and otherwise brush it aside. next: whereabouts #1 --- ... 77. Trails in the Sky SC Whereabouts of Hope
Nominated by: NoFUN Have I heard it before? Probably. I get all these Whereabouts songs confused. This is five minutes of nothing. Variations on the same theme, it toggles between piano and string orchestra, and obviously the orchestra has a lot more feels to it, but the song just drags it sits behind the beat and doesnt ever develop anything new. Thats not the way to hold my attention. It's obviously got enough going for it to avoid scraping bottom, but that's about it. next: the next tier of average, which I'm probably going to bang out in one big flurry --- ... Weve reached a point where I have to start pouring on all the songs that I guess I can respect, or at least dont mind, but have to label as not for me. Both for simplicity and because trying to rank these tracks amongst themselves is going to be largely impossible. So I'm just going to mass vomit up like 15 at once here.
76. Metroid: Zero Mission Credits Nominated by: Dragon66116 Have I heard it before? No To that effect, we start with M:ZM. Credits is okay. Its got a bold and triumphant thing that goes great with the vibe of beating a game. Considering of Nintendos major franchises, Metroid is the least known for any particular themes or anthems, and this is a Game Boy game, I guess I cant ask for much. Im not quite sure why, but I feel just a pinch disappointed, though, like I wanted more from it. 75. Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations End Nominated by: Dragon66116 Have I heard it before? No, despite this being Board 8 Ive never played an Ace Attorney game, so I dunno whats going on during this ending. Im also not usually a fan of the majority of the music from the PW series. So I didnt have high expectations, and they were easily met by this introspective piece, where I presume something bittersweet has happened at the conclusion of the game. The mood of the opening is interesting, and the change at 1:55 keeps the piece moving forward nicely while giving us a more upbeat vibe to wrap things up. 74. Persona 4 Arena NOW I KNOW Nominated by: Arti Have I heard it before? No I cant go quite so far as to call this elevator music, but its close. NOW I KNOW (all caps) is merely pleasant, going out of its way to be inoffensive. The vocals are tame. The drums and backing are controlled. It fits together in a safe little bundle that Im sure makes it perfectly serviceable within the game, but nothing to herald. The biggest problem, if Its fair to levy this against a credits theme, is that I dont need to listen to almost six minutes of this track, but unlike some of the songs at the bottom of the list, Im not chanting to myself why isnt this over? Its still a decent composition. I listened to this right before Never More, and I found that irritating, while NIK doesnt trigger me. 73. Ni no Kuni Kokoro no Kakera Nominated by: jcgamer107 Have I heard it before? No A very pretty piece, with a singer that doesnt quite fit within the songs envelope. However, the thing that strikes me about this piece is that despite the fact that there are a variety of different lines, I feel like the song never really develops. The opening is interesting as an opening, but I dont want to listen to four minutes of it. Even when the orchestral moments come in, I feel like its still kinda same-y. 72. Iridion II Interstellar Journey Nominated by: Ace_Killjoy Have I heard it before? No An okay song, but a little cheesy sounding. I dunno how much of that is the GBA and how much of that is the composer being a fan of late 80s music. Aaand, thats all I got. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

71. .hack//G.U. Vol 2//Reminisce The Whereabouts of Truth
Nominated by: xp1337 Have I heard it before? I want to say yes Not for me is about the best way I can summarize this one. The main vocals are clean and well-executed. The backing knows its place and supports the singer. And often I like these soft, somber, vocal-driven pieces, but this one doesnt catch me. Im not necessarily in love with the chanting parts, and there were moments where the drum fills were too strong, but overall we just chalk this one up to me not latching onto it. 70. Persona 4: Dancing All Night Calystagia Nominated by: LeonhartFour Have I heard it before? No Happy little piece. Of course I have no idea what its about, but the people in the video seem excited enough, and why wouldnt they be when theyre dancing all night? Ultimately, though, Calystagias problem is the same one that all Persona tracks suffer theyre from Persona. Okay, joking aside, because I dont actively hate Persona the way I do, say, Banjo-Kazooie, Persona music is just there. Its perpetually 6/10. Calystagia maybe edges ahead of most of the other Persona tracks Ive heard because it is fairly likeable, but I prefer VGM to BGM. 69. Ys I & II Chronicles Victory Nominated by: Arti Have I heard it before? No Not a fan of the sound of Victory. A quick, poppy tempo is often enough to sell a song at least a decent way up a list like this, and it did for me at first, but then I listened again and realized the instruments are kinda dirty and the vocalist is really straining to hold some of those higher notes. Its hard to hate a happy song like this, and thus I dont, because Im not a monster, but Victorys not as great as it could have been. 68. Pokmon Black 2 and White 2 Ending and Credits Nominated by: Shonen_bat Have I heard it before? No Black 2 and White 2, and we get both ending AND credits. I feel like Im really getting two for the price of one! Actually, Im probably getting a lot more than that, because E&C is variations on the same theme throughout its five minutes. Its one of those pieces thats way better when its just playing in the background then when youre actively concentrating and trying to do a write-up, because I liked it up until I had to try to analyze it. Then I kept going god, isnt it over yet? Which is completely unfair, because its a happy, upbeat ending that I can totally picture being used on the classic walk-around-the-world thing that games often do during credits. 67. Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Credits Nominated by: jcgamer107 Have I heard it before? Yes, because it plays everywhere in the game So I have to admit, Id a little confused here. My first reaction was I used to like this. Why does it feel so bland? Then I looked into the matter a bit and realized this isnt the version of the song I know. Morrowinds title theme, Nerevar Rising, has a much stronger focus on drums and brass despite the opening flute melody. This rendition is much more subdued. And as much as Morrowind is a pretty crappy game due to the mechanics being horrendous, Bethesda still crafted a magical world that I spent many, many hours in, getting beat up by cliff racers and constantly missing scribs. So I really expected that nostalgic tie. Instead, I just felt like the song was kinda washed up. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

66. Umineko Bring the Fate
Nominated by: SceptileSolar Have I heard it before? No I listened to this one repeatedly and never came up with any material for a write-up. Im just honestly uncertain what to say about it. Theres nothing to target and say its bad, which is my usual go-to. Im not in love with it, and yet I like all the parts, and they generally fit together well. Yeah, I got nothing. I liked it. Its a solid like, but not a add-to-my-playlists level of interest. 65. Kirbys Epic Yarn Staff Credits Nominated by: Johnbobb Have I heard it before? No Just pleasant relaxing music. I wouldnt be surprised to hear this playing softly in certain stores at the mall. My first instinct was to call it elevator music, but first of all it has drums, and second elevator music has a really negative connotation and I dont think KEYs credits deserve that. I just dont have much to pick at and describe, so Im left making up random stuff to say in the write-up as filler. 64. Pangya; Fantasy Golf Starlight Nominated by: Arti Have I heard it before? No So let me see if Ive got this right. This is an anime golfing game? *shrug* Kay. Starlight is upbeat and poppy. Nothing especially memorable. Sometimes upbeat and poppy is enough, though. 63. Pokemon Black/White Ending Theme Nominated by: tazzyboyishere Have I heard it before? Dont think so, but maybe during BOST I remember when B/W made an appearance in Best OST one year, and I was blown away by the fact that there was a Pokemon (main series) soundtrack that I didnt immediately find ho-hum. Im not stopping to check, but I suspect the ending theme was part of that line-up. In fact, what strikes me most about this piece is that it sounds like it could be from one of the mystery dungeon games. Probably someone will tell me its the same composition team. If so, I say let them do more. B/Ws ending is uptempo, has some good melodic lines, and creates a solid mood. Plus I know its not the only decent work on the soundtrack. 62. Ar nosurge Ar-ciel Ar-manaf Nominated by: xp1337 Have I heard it before? Yes. I dont love Gust nearly as much as xp or dowolf, since Im pretty sure thats physically impossible, but I have a great measure of respect for their work, as the Metafalica write-up alluded to. Their music is always exceptional in terms of production, and outside of a few very creative pieces, its pretty hard to dislike them. That doesnt mean I love them, and AcAm is a very average Gust piece in terms of what Ive heard via VGMC and the like. Yes, average for Gust is a pretty high bar, but this is a tough list, and Im not afraid to lower the boom on an objectively good piece if it doesnt move me. And that should do it for the mass update. 61. ResQ Ending
Nominated by: MycroProcessor Have I heard it before? No Somehow I didnt realize this came from the Genesis even though its right there in the video and the hallmarks of the Genesis soundboard are very evident in the backing chords. The overall sound of ResQs ending is kinda neat. It doesnt push too hard, and maybe its even a pinch too laidback, but it gets by just fine with a very sparse melodic line because of its structure. Not going to the top of the list, but a solid inclusion on the list. 60. Fatal Frame 3 Koe (Voice) Nominated by: dowolf Have I heard it before? no I dont especially care for the opening piano line, which seems like its going to be out of one of Snakes survival horror games. At 1:13, it finally leaves that behind, and soon after segues into a hard rock chorus. The piano seems a little less annoying after getting my socks rocked, with the most dominant performance easily from the singer, Tsukiko Amano, who has a bunch of jumps that are only fifths but sound like theyre much wider. I was very impressed with the singing the first time I heard the piece, but after a few more listens, it actually gets kinda grating, causing this one to tumble in the rankings. --- ... Nominated by: SceptileSolar Have I heard it before? No Song loops at about 3:00. Based on the intro, I got a very different piece than I was expecting. Thats okay. Its interesting, driven by the steady sixteenths backing the track. The drums also do their job solidly, and the change of pace at 1:45 keeps the piece from being too same-y. 58. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night I am the Wind
Nominated by: th3l3fty Have I heard it before? No This song is so 90s it burns! Im told SotN is an all-time great, but Ive never played it. Im reasonably confident that I am the Wind doesnt fit the overall style, so much as the likelihood that somebody on Konamis sound team was a fan of Kenny G and Celine Dion. And whats up with lefty pulling tracks like these out of his hat? Youve got to believe he was toying with tossing me Girl in the Tower instead. That would have been easy to rank. IATW is a little trickier to place because its panache is precisely what makes the song listenable, and it doesnt overreach (or have poor performances). As is usual for me, Im completely disregarding the lyrics, but if I didnt, that would probably drag this down a bit while I tried to figure out what its going on about. Four minutes is probably just the right length for this schmaltz-fest. It overshoots that by 30 ticks, but Im used to 90s tracks with long outros. next: double double cheese cheese --- ... Nominated by: pyresword Have I heard it before? Yes Ive never played FF9 beyond one session at my friends, but Ive seen MoL played as background for a bunch of videos related to the game, usually with a video montage of Dagger/Garnet and whatever monkey boys name is. As a result, I was a little surprised this was an ending theme. I figured it played during an FMV the way Eyes on Me does. (Unsurprisingly, several of the recommended videos while this was playing were for Eyes on Me.) The song itself embraces its cheese. As long as one isnt lactose-intolerant, this is fine. 56. Xenosaga III Maybe Tomorrow ~ Ending Melody
Nominated by: xp1337 Have I heard it before? I believe so Maybe Tomorrow itself is a little hammy in the way a couple other pieces on this list have been (albeit less so). Its still quite pretty. Im a little less sold on the ending medley that follows mostly because the intense piece that kicks it off doesnt fit in with the rest. When it switches into Hepatica, that part fits fine, and I guess so does the bit after. Then the piece comes full circle, so that one switch feels kinda jarring. As long as I dont mind a soft, sweet piece, theres really nothing else to downplay about MT~EM. I keep trying to edit in a blank line here and it's not working! 55. Xenosaga II: Jenseits Von Gut Und Boese Sweet Song Nominated by: dowolf Have I heard it before? Yes I forgot just how cheesy this track was. Have I never noticed that this is a common trend in ending themes, or did we just get a bunch of people picking those out? Sweet Song is certainly effusive, so sweet its saccharine. I still like it, just with reservations. If Im going to take a Xenosaga track, I prefer Hepatica (Kos-Mos). Im going to line up Sweet Song at the end of this set because I like it the most (duh) and because I think that it does the best job of being an ending. It isnt merely sappy. Nominated by: Snake5555555555 Have I heard it before? No Theres still a Snake nom remaining on the list, but this is the one I was most impressed with. Considering he always falls back on survival horror pieces, which isnt a genre known for great music (for obvious reasons), its refreshing to hear a solid orchestral composition. Credit Line doesnt do anything remarkable. Its not some special piece Im going to hold in my heart forever. But, like most of the other works in the genre, it does what it needs to for what is expected of itwhich happens to not be setting a creepy ambient mood, in this case. 53. Mother 3 Curtain Call
Nominated by: Shonen_bat Have I heard it before? No Im a notorious critic of Earthbounds music. Im not sure why precisely, but it gets to me. And I think part of it is some of the most stinging losses my pet songs in VGMC have suffered have been at Earthbounds hands. (Thanks, Smiles and Tears.) Im acutely aware that EB is Mother 2, but I know absolutely nothing about Mother 3 other than that it has that glaringly awful bright red box. Curtain Call is, I presume, some kind of medley. It changes style throughout its eight minutes, but one thing it has going for it that I dont see in too many of the other medleys on this list (which are numerous since this is ending and credits themes) is that the sections are actually blended together to the point that although Im well aware of where one theme ends and another picks up, it doesnt feel disjointed. Also, each of these individual strains seems to work well independently, and for however quirky some of the Earthbound music is, that sort of uniqueness works out really well in Curtain Call. The orchestral samples make it sound like it could have stepped out of the 16-bit DragonQuest games, but its those nuances that put it above DQs music. next: another ballad --- ... The you were there line is the most distinctive part of a piece that is driven by its mood with the vocals floating on top. Im not sure if the mixing on this is flawless or all kinds of wrong, but I dont think theres any in-between in choosing to emphasize the instruments over the singer.
