Knowing they are coming from above and there is no cover for anyone makes it worse.

8I'm ok, thanks. Last night and this morning was filled with a stream of texts to/from friends. All friends I've heard from are safe. One was near the venue but was unharmed. He posted eerie pictures afterward of a strip casino completely empty, which I have never seen before. Another friend said SHE had coworkers at the venue who fled behind an airplane hangar for refuge.

I'm at work now and it's creepily normal around here, but we're in the suburbs. The strip must still be crazy.

When something terrible happens, many people look for something to blame as their way to cope. If you believe in gun control it's a very natural thing to single out immediately as a convenient thing to blame-- it doesn't really have anything to do with some political masterplan.

Has there been news on whether all/any of the weaponry the shooter used was legally obtained? It feels like there's this general assumption that weapons able to cause this much carnage must either be illegally procured or illegally modified, but I haven't read anything official yet.

CNN is reporting that investigators have not yet found evidence that he purchased any full auto weapons and thus logically he must have modified the semi autos he did purchase.

But thats really not definitive yet, the investigation is not even a day old yet.

Apparently this guy just snapped a month or 2 ago and started buying just a shitload of weapons.

Some thoughts I had that are in no way in response to anyone...

The gun control stuff is not "the left politicizing a tragedy." When an event like this where so many people are killed and injured by gun violence, how is the mental response "let's stop gun violence so these shootings stop happening" anything but natural? It isn't necessarily realistic, but from people here are saying, the opposing view of "this could have been stopped if a lot of these civilians themselves had guns" is even more unrealistic. It doesn't sound like that logic even has a place in this context. "We don't want this stuff happening anymore and we feel like this idea might help" is not an agenda-based response. It's a human response. Even I of all people can see that.

I think incidents like this are exactly why gun control is a big deal by the way.

The typical response from gun rights activists is "if you control guns, only the criminals have guns"

Which is actually something I sort of agree with.

But dudes like this? Normal non-criminal people who just snap? If he had to go through criminal channels to get his guns, he would've been much much more likely to fail to attain those weapons, I feel. Most "crazy" people aren't really anything that resembles courageous and would likely be walled off well before obtaining an armory.

I guess what I'm saying is I trust criminals more than the mad. And on the plus side, you put stronger gun control in place the more cowardly criminals, of which there are many (and who are frankly probably some of the more dangerous to have a gun since opening fire is an easy panic reaction), are getting walled out as well.

yeah, this is what i thought when foolmo said "lol @ the idea that you can't get guns if they're illegal" in one of these gun control arguments. obviously you CAN still get guns, but it doesn't seem to be as ridiculously easy to get them when they're illegal.

maybe this shooter did have illegally modified weapons but still.

Illegally modifying a gun isn't really anything that you should feel particularly paranoid about doing anyway. Knowledge and proficiency are the two walls there moreso than legality. Like, I don't know the exact specifics but I do know from a gun enthusiast friend that you can do this kinda stuff without buying any illegal or even suspicious parts.

But getting the basic armory as your start point before the modifications is a big deal. I do think you'd have overall a lot less people able to shoot up places, simply because there aren't a lot of Walter Whites in the real world. Not a ton of overlap between the amount of guts/connections for that amount of criminal activity, proficiency to illegally modify, and being mentally screwed up. Particularly because the latter directly runs at odds with the former two.

You don't think the guy just walked in carrying his guns in plain view, do you? Most likely they were in suitcases. Yes there are security guards (I mean all these Vegas hotels are connected to casinos after all), but no, they don't stop and search every guest's luggage.
