I had the sega genesis, i presume both were out at the same time and that's the one i chose, pretty sure they were direct competitors at the time.....

.....i think the genesis sold better and yet there are huge lines for the snes mini

A quick search would imply that you're wrong. SNES definitively sold more worldwide, and while apparently older estimates put the Genesis ahead in the US, newer research put the SNES ahead there as well.

The SNES, which had a better library and a better controller. Most of the Genesis's top games were things that didn't greatly appeal to me. At the time, I think I was most interested in the genesis for Altered Beasts and Moonwalker.

Instead of saying "iirc" or "I think," you could just look the thing up. Granted, given that the SNES outsold the Genesis by a massive amount -- 49m to 29m -- you should know it regardless.

Also, for those who think the Mega Drive / Genesis had nothing good for it, I'll recommend at least looking up these games and try any for your preferred genre.

After Burner II
Alien Soldier
Alisia Dragoon
Beyond Oasis
Bio-Hazard Battle
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
Castlevania: Bloodlines
Columns
Comix Zone
Contra: Hard Corps
Cosmic Spacehead
Crusader of Centy
Cyborg Justice
Dragon's Fury
Ecco the Dolphin series
Eternal Champions
Gauntlet IV
General Chaos
Golden Axe series
Gunstar Heroes
Hellfire
Herzog Zwei
Landstalker
Light Crusader
Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar
Lotus II: RECS
Mega Turrican
Mercs
OutRun
OutRun 2019 (despite the name, this was original called Junkers High and was unrelated to the Outrun series)
Phantasy Star series
Puggsy
Red Zone
Road Rash series
Sagaia (AKA Darius II)
Shadowrun (different game from the SNES release)
Shining in the Darkness
Shining Force
Shining Force II
Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
Skitchin' (Road Rash spinoff)
Sonic the Hedgehog series (an obvious inclusion)
Space Harrier II
Splatterhouse series
Streets of Rage series
Sub-Terrania
Super Hang-On
Technoclash
The Adventures of Batman & Robin
The Lost Vikings (been avoiding cross system releases, but this had more content than the SNES game)
ToeJam & Earl series
Two Crude Dudes

I could expand the list further with Mega CD and the 32X, but I'm not sure they count within this topic, so just listed games for the base system.

Also, some food for thought. SNES voters, of your favourite library, how many are those epic RPGs that are still popular even now? PAL gamers didn't get that kind of stuff from Square and Enix. The popular Mega Drive RPGs (Phantasy Star and Shining) were released everywhere.

FFIV, FFVI, Secret of Mana, SMRPG, Chrono Trigger, and... well, the list goes on. Doubly so if you count the RPGs which didn't get a US release at the time, like the Dragon Quest games.

As for the great ones which aren't popular today, that's a shame. I love Lufia 2 enough for everybody, though.

Of that lot, only Secret of Mana got a PAL release, a fact that surprises me. Amazing that we got any of them.

The SNES still had good games but the ones people still remember skipped most of the world. Really no wonder that PAL regions had the Mega Drive do better. :P

while the genesis version did have superior elements to it, I still think the snes version was slightly better. bad music and atmosphere can hurt a game.

on your RPG thing though, SNES had atleast FF 4 and 6 (as far as what america got), and chrono trigger I believe. some would argue quality over quantity, but quality is of course subjective

Genesis because of the Sega CD. I hardly found any cart games on either system that I liked. I have a feeling that when I really start getting into the PCEngine/TurboGrafx library, it'll overtake both.

And it's not so easy to just look up sales numbers since, AFAIK, Sega never released official sales figures. It's pretty close between the two as a whole. From my understanding, the SNES overtook the Genesis in the US because it lingered on for so long after Sega had fully moved on to the Saturn.

I still play streets of rage, don't ask me why I think its better than Final Fight, I just do. only thing I can guess is because it being less "cartoony" looking made it edgy to me as a kid.

well I also loved how you could legit get a ending where you became the bad guy, first game I ever played where a moral choice like that could be made even if it required 2 player to get that.

Genesis of course. The snes was great though. Nintendo has yet to make another good console.

Do you think, if they had an unlimited supply, that snes mini thing would have sold more than all of their consoles after snes?

It's close, but I'm going with the SNES. I prefer lengthy type games with save features, and the SNES was better with those, IMO.
When it comes down to games to beat in one sitting, the Genesis hands down. Sonic, Ristar, Golden Axe, Streets Of Rage 2, etc.

Oh, and the Genesis came out two years prior to the SNES in the states.

Genesis has a few games I really like but the SNES has a f ton of games I really love. SNES hands down no question.

Also the controller for SNES is waaaaaaaay better than the 3 button Genesis controller. And the while the 6 button is a good upgrade it still feels cheap compared to the SNES controller. The d pad is to soft and floppy feeling. The SNES is tighter and feels better.

Still I have both systems and play both so win win if you have both:)

I grew up with Sega, so that's really the one I'm tied to.

Of course these are all niche to the Nintendo-grown boy, but as far as I'm concerned, games like Streets of Rage, Beyond Oasis, Golden Axe, Shining Force and Sonic 3&K are primes.

I think the SNES was a better all around system with some of my all time favorite games.

Growing up, I didn't own a SNES until after it's lifespan was over and n64 was already out, (we had a Sega Genesis instead). Sega wasn't bad by any means, and had many games that I still love today but seemed a bit more rough around the edges.

Love them both, but SNES get my vote.
