Hey 17 years is better than not getting one at all, especially when he has put 17 years into it.
Good for him for finally completing it. I do worry about the massive debt he might be in for it taking that long though... --- Smash DS Code: 4554-0120-5368 SB4 Name: Roz RIP: Orlando of the Axe Karma: 1642 --he delivered! ... Copied to Clipboard!

Hey 17 years is better than not getting one at all, especially when he has put 17 years into it. most of it was paid for. It's one of the reasons it took 17 years is because it was basically real research he was doing. If he had to pay for the whole thing out of pocket he would not have lasted that long. His family has got money but not that much money. To put this into perspective for anyone wondering if 17 years is normal, I have a friend who became an actual doctor (psychiatrist) in less time and he changed his mind halfway through after pursuing a career in surgery for a while. --- ... What you are saying makes it sound like he was the PI on his research. That's not normal for a PhD student. Professors should either hold a grant to do your research already or work with the student for future studies. For example, my research was funded by government sources and private funding from an outside company. We did apply together for funding for future studies and future students but that was not a primary aim of my graduation. I think this is fairly typical. We wrote a few NSF grant proposals and one from NIH, but I have since moved on since I didn't want to be a professor. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I know he was in some minor authority position. He had keys to access the building after hours and such and had to do things like lock up rooms with animals so that the cleaning staff couldn't get in and fuck up the ongoing experiments, and that he was basically paid to get his degree--although not much.
