most of it was paid for. It's one of the reasons it took 17 years is because it was basically real research he was doing. If he had to pay for the whole thing out of pocket he would not have lasted that long. His family has got money but not that much money.

To put this into perspective for anyone wondering if 17 years is normal, I have a friend who became an actual doctor (psychiatrist) in less time and he changed his mind halfway through after pursuing a career in surgery for a while.

I did some research for a company in addition to my regular dissertation work to pay for some of my materials. They used my research for their national marketing campaign. It was pretty cool knowing that my work went into the ads for a multi billion dollar chemical company. Good on him for having funding.
