Again, this isn't the first time he's gone through the controversy of belting out the n-word on stream. Or countless other shit like the 'death to all jews' controversy.

He's one of those people that double down and claim people are too easily offended rather than reflecting that maybe he did something wrong. And then his followers are the exact same, so they reinforce each other to keep doing the same shit over and over. This won't be the last time we hear this garbage from PDP, as far as he's concerned there's nothing wrong with using the n-word, the problem is others for being offended by it.

"big problem" lol. It's not going to affect him or his income or view count in the slightest.

after PewDiePie aired an anti-semetic "gag" earlier in the year, YouTube cancelled his YouTube Red show, Disney terminated their relationship with him, and so many advertisers began pulling out of YouTube that some channels lost upwards of 80% of their revenue overnight. so.

As for pewdiepie, what he said was absolutely <redacted>, but I question why people care so much. Is this such a shock someone on his level would say something like that? Accidentally or otherwise. Has he done something to make you believe that he has high standards, and that this moment was such a shock to said standards?

Then again, I don't look at this videos. So maybe that's why I don't care. It's easy to not care when you mentally list someone as "irrelevant".

Irrelevant to you personally, but he's the face of YouTube streamers and spreads this trash to millions of children. PDP isn't some nobody.

All of that because the n word is just like "asshole" in his mind? This is the conclusion that you guys think is reasonable?

yes, honestly, i think that is probably his thought process

If his thought process is that the n word and "asshole" are the same, then why did he feel the need to "correct" TO asshole and downplay it? If he legitimately thinks they're the same, then he shouldn't have even reacted to saying it.

If you think it's okay to take a cookie from the cookie jar, you just take it. You don't try to sneak in, take it, then go "Oh, uh, I thought it was a carrot" if you get caught.

That's basically admitting wrong-doing.

He immediately knew he shouldn't have said it, switched to an actual generic insult ("Asshole"), and tried to downplay it.

He 100% knows not to say it and your theory is flawed.

I think you missed the point of my story.

I am okay with the word gay
I am not okay with the word ******

I've let the former slip once in a great while in contexts where it's poor form when being around people who use it that way, because the word is something I have no issue using. Gay is gay. There's nothing wrong with that. The latter has never come out of my mouth, not ever.

I'd assume pewdiepie simply doesn't have any legitimate feeling of revulsion towards the n-word-- he has to "fake it" because he didn't grow up in a culture where it mattered or where the significance of it mattering was hammered into his head, and has these 14 year olds around him saying it all the time. This doesn't make him a racist, it just makes him someone who didn't grow up in a culture where the word mattered in any meaningful way, corrupted by 14 year olds before he had any intimate feeling that the word was something that shouldn't be said.

It basically comes down to association. He hears the word, he thinks "stupid 14 year old" not "stupid racist 14 year old." That doesn't mean he's racist, that just means he was exposed to it on a large scale through stupid 14 year olds before he really absorbed the impact of the word.

Keep in mind I'm not really trying to defend pewdiepie as anything but "not necessarily a racist." I think the guy is awful but yeah.

That's true I suppose. It's not as if he's some unknown random that gets 100 view max.

Spreading such nonsense to millions of children is obviously a bad thing. I just tell myself "Well their parents are clearly going to be responsible enough to set them straight, and they know why they shouldn't use that word in any situation."

And then I remember I'm placing entirely too much faith in people.

did your friends call each other/you that? when i say setting i mean more than geographical, i'm talking about the norm among your peers

i literally never even heard the word until seeing roots in middle school history. the next day in history class our teacher asked us to list examples of what the slavers called their slaves, and i repeated the word, and she was like 'we don't say that word.' i was really puzzled at the time as it was a direct answer to her question, but that might be the only time i've actually been told that the word was bad

what i mean is, to him, they're the same. but he can recognize from the reaction of others that it's not. but in what i assume is a very solitary activity where he's used to having no filter, he sometimes defaults to the worse one without thinking

and yes, he admitted wrongdoing

i'm guessing that for him, it's more comparable to me getting a paper cut during a school presentation and accidentally saying 'motherfucker' instead of 'ouch' or 'dammit'

No, this doesn't really fly. If he knows he has to "fake it" since he doesn't feel revulsion to it personally, then he knows WHY he has to fake it. And if he knows WHY he has to fake it, then his mind is already differentiating between n word and "asshole." Thus, they're not the same to him anymore, since he's making a differentiation of "I can say this but not this on stream." Him slipping up when faking it means he doesn't fake it when he's not on stream, which means... Despite knowing why he shouldn't say the word, he doesn't care and says it anyway.

But him being stupid doesn't make it a ton better than him being racist since he still knows what the word is/does and doesn't seem to care.

No, I didn't grow up in a situation where that particular word is the norm, but as someone who doesn't use profanity, I've never just accidentally let one slip just because everyone around me at work or school used those words all the time. Those were words I didn't want to say, and I didn't say them.

PDP probably doesn't think of that word as "a word I should never say." It's just "a word I should never say on a video," so it's probably more likely to slip out because he doesn't personally have a negative view of it. Like, if it's a word you have strong feelings about not saying ever, it's not just going to slip out by accident.

There's a difference between knowing at an instinctive level and at a knowledge level though. I know not to touch the stove because it's hot, and I'm never going to touch the hot stove ever. I also know the quadratic formula. If I'm rambling on a stream at a million miles a minute I might blank on dividing the mess by 2a. It doesn't mean I don't know the quadratic formula.

The point I'm making is it's wrong doing because of his primary exposure to the word and not because he's (necessarily) racist. It is just a word like asshole to him. It makes him a guy who clearly doesn't think through what he says all the time, which that should have been obvious WAY before this.

We don't necessarily disagree. I'm merely saying that it shouldn't be used as an excuse like some people are trying to do. If it's just a word like asshole to him even though he knows what's attached to it, then he's still a dickhead and it shouldn't be handwaved.

Trying to bring up "Well, he doesn't understand it because X" in the first place is making excuses/trying to downplay it.

I know that this is basically the reason they do it.... I just personally never got why the word should be used at all. People say they're "taking the word back" but.... why take it back at all? It was a word born out of fear and hatred, what value would it have to anyone relevant? If it was up to me, "er" and "ga" would be on the same level. A shameful word used exclusively by people who will forever be on the wrong side of history.

The sad honest answer is that people WILL use it against them in their lives to attempt to be derogatory out of fear and hatred. So the black culture in the US does use the word to "take it back" meaning take the sting away.

If we were in an ideal world where no one would use the word anymore out of hate then yeah, your ideas are valid. But we definitely aren't there yet.

"I forget I'm streaming" implies "I forget I'm streaming and so I say stuff I say when I'm not streaming"

You missed the point of the rebuttal. PDP 100% associates the n word in the same tier as the f word. That's why he feverishly corrected it to asshole, which is in an much higher tier of offensiveness than gay. So to say he has the n word in the same tier as gay makes 100% no sense.

You cuss more against your own will?

Probably a bit? Anything you want to avoid doing is at least a tiny bit harder to avoid the more time you spend around people who do it, I think.

I'm not really interested in defending use of the n-word but I can at least sorta see where sd was coming from at the point I jumped in. It was easier not to cuss (or even think profanity in my head) when I was around fewer people who cussed, and I assume it'd be the same for slurs.
