Explanation below

Basically your future will be better in every way possible by a wide margin but you will forget your entire past. That's all your memories gone.

No as my memories and experiences make me who I am today. Plus I wouldn't want to forget some memories.

If you give up your memories, you won't know. You won't feel about it, you won't care. Anybody voting no is illogical. Easiest question on the planet. Did you mean to add in some twist?

Oh, your wording was confusing. You made it sound like you were getting rid of a better future to forget your past.

As for forgetting everything for a better future, I'm not sure that there's enough "better" to offset the suffering of losing your memories. Also, would we still have photos, videos, and other people remembering the stuff? It's just that we can't personally remember anything, right? And can the memories come back? Oh wait, if we forget everything, how the fuck will we remember to do basic human functions like dressing ourselves? How could your life be better in every way if you can't even dress yourself or know anything about food?

Entire past? Like we'd forget how to talk? Forget how to walk? Forget absolutely everything? It's hard to see how my future would be better by forgetting even the most basic life skills =/

I'm bitter about my past anyway. Amnesia alone is already an improvement. On top of that I get a future that is guaranteed better than what I'm putting behind me.

Well, if you don't remember how crappy your past was, then it's not like you'd appreciate how much "better" your future is going to be.

It's going to feel basically the same, I think, with no memories to compare the future to. Also, you'd be a completely different person; you'd essentially just die.

The choices are either to have a better life or don't have a better life

But if you currently have a good life and your past was great, then it could still easily be a net negative gain. Not everyone on the board is a tragic emo-kid bemoaning how terrible their life is/used to be.

Then there's also the fact that he in no way said how LONG your awesome future would last, so there's always the possibility that you might be giving up 40 years worth of great memories for a 10-year binge (or less).

There's also the argument that if a person is the sum of their memories, then the "you" that you currently are wouldn't be enjoying that better life anyway, since it would effectively be like "you" were dead and someone else walking around in your body would be having the awesome life.

Even with a great past you can't live through it again no matter how good your memory is.

So what if I'm essentially a different person? My life will be better and I'll be experiencing it.

I don't see how they could possibly cancel out. We're not 4 dimensional beings that can see past, present and future all at once. The future and present is what matters most since the past is already done with whether we remember or not.

That raises a question. Do you forget your past up to the time you made the trade, or are you effective unable to form new memories because the present is always becoming the past?

Once the trade is made you keep your new memories and you still have your basic functions like walking and talking .

Pretty much. It's going to take a lot of better to make up for having no past memories, but by the parameters of the exchange, the future is going to be better than it would be if I had memories, so that's not going to be a problem.
