No legendary or mega pokemon

Damn! Well, in some ways it makes it easier. Granted, I should also factor in practicality and diversity but... meh

Working list:

Tyranitar - Wasn't one of the first things to jump to mind but saw it on Ogu's list and, tbh, I have generally liked the Pokemon. He's also a power-house and has built-in sandstorm.

Venusaur - Favorite starter. Wide range of combat uses given his powder attacks, leech seed, etc.

Garchomp - Incredibly strong Pokemon whose ability to tunnel would be useful.

Gengar - A ghost type seems practical and, while I prefer other ghosts, he's really the best. I guess Decidueye would be neat as well. He has access to a lot of psychic-type moves which would be useful.

Ditto - It's a Pokemon which has, on the show, demonstrated the ability to transform into practically anything. Granted, "Go-Go-Ditto-Car!" might not be a useful command but still...
Pokemon Go in particular has given me more of an appreciation for Ditto, considering that there are a *lot* of Pokemon I can't seem to get but Ditto basically lets me try them out.

The only downside with the list so far is that I don't have any water Pokemon for surf... granted, t-tar *can* learn surf but how well would a rock type really do in the water? Because I have a hunch it'd sink like... something. Of course, the bigger thing I was considering was a Pokemon with flying since I'd really want a flyer to get around. As such, I guess I'm kinda forced to go with...

Dragonite - Not a huge Dragonite fan, but it has a crazy movepool which would make it useful for transportation and everything else. Plus trying to get one in Pokemon Go has kinda made me want one more.

Other things kinda at the top of my list
Raichu - One of my all-time faves, but wouldn't be a great Pokemon IRL
Donphan - Also a beloved Pokemon, but strictly worse than others
Mamoswine
Gyarados - Brother's favorite Pokemon; Used it fairly often since it's pretty strong
Drapion
Mimikyu - Possibly my favorite gen7 Pokemon
Banette
Excadrill - Fave gen5 Pokemon?
Blaziken - My second-favorite starter Pokemon

Pretty sure the hardship is less about battling and more about the travel. Granted, either way the whole adventure aspect sounds fun... although they must have one messed up economy to facilitate it, especially considering how tiny their towns/cities are.

Nobody in Rocket seems to get rich. Plus you'd have to wear those weird outfits even in hot and cold areas.

tbh, in general practical favorites would have to take precedence over less useful faves if choosing for IRL. And, honestly, Weezing and Muk probably wouldn't be awful irl considering that Weezing has a neat hovering ability (levitation) and Muk's natural semi-liquid state makes him versatile (quillfish, however, is garbage)

Muk *maybe* but Weezing doesn't seem to continuously emit an odor. Plus you don't have to have them right next to you and clearly their smell isn't overwhelming given that other characters near them don't react that strongly. If it was really awful, nobody would use them.

kinda depends on what we are going by, anime rules, games, pokedex entries? they all contradict each other often

Pokedex entries (game ones) contradict themselves, which is why nobody uses them. The *only* real source you have for this is the anime since it's not a game function. Plus, in some cases, the Pokedex entry being true would mean that the Pokemon wouldn't be used in the game.

I dont think its that cut and dry since the anime is the one with the least amount of influence from the people in charge of making pokemon itself

Except for the fact that the anime heavily influenced the games, to the point that XY used a companion system and -- years earlier -- the anime changed character and monster designs in the games. Plus the anime is, broadly speaking, the more complete incarnation of the franchise and covers aspects which would otherwise be left to imagination.

As for the in-game Pokedex, it was *always* notoriously unreliable.

As for the in-game Pokedex, it was *always* notoriously unreliable. Especially given that, if the examples you cite are true, nobody in the games would actually use those Pokemon. The fact that they do demonstrates that the Pokedex entries are either exaggerations or just something made up on the spot by the localization team

And, in general, a LOT of people are "in charge of making Pokemon." It's not like there's one person doing everything.
