Probably Bioshock. Everyone was hailing it as this revolutionary masterpiece that changed the way games tell stories and create atmosphere forever.

Instead it was a watered down System Shock 2 with rhe exact same story and plot twists but under water. And the idea of the tapes detailing the decline of society, even if it wasn't done in System Shock 2, had already been done way better in Metroid Prime.

Also, I love Preston Starry complaining to literally nobody about why he doesn't come here anymore and no one acknowledges him or cares.

MGSV by a massive margin

However, if I hadn't played MGSV then it would easily have been FFXV or Breath of the Wild, but those felt better after having played MGSV

If I didn't play any of those, it would be Danganronpa 1 for sure

They're only about 4 years apart. Anyone who's played both around the time of their release isn't going to be nostalgic for only one of them.

That being said, I have to agree with Tom. Super Mario RPG is my favorite game and I didn't care for Paper Mario. (Though TTYD is awesome)

Honestlt SSF2THDR disappointed me, but as far as the graphics go

The graphics were still great but They were compared to guilty gear graphics by various sources and they were not nearly as smooth as they those were. Yea, they reanimated every frame of every sprite but it still came out very choppy lookin.

Alvin Lee was clearly the head of the art design but it didn't look as good as his SF comic look.

I enjoy Paper Mario and TTYD so much more than SMRPG. I'd put Super Paper Mario, Super Star Saga and Bowser's Inside Story ahead of it, too.

SMRPG is still a pretty decent game, though. I'm not a fan of the graphical style and so many of the characters and environments feel so bland compared with the first Paper Mario games. But at its core, it's more fun than most RPGs and there's still some charm and humor there.

Driving Simulator 15 (Aka FF15)

I liked 12 and 13. 15 is horrible. bland battle system, and the worst part is that the game is sexist and none of the playable characters are females.

Also Lunar Dragon song, I heard it was horrible. Then again the same people told me that Phantasy Star 3 was horrible and I liked that game, so I thought they were exaggerating. It was worse than they told me. I sold it back for like 25 cents because I didn't want that game anywhere near me. Worst game ever.

There might be another one out there but the first thing I think of is Assassin's Creed 3.

I was ready for a new protagonist after 3 (excellent) Ezio games, I was ready for the conclusion to the whole Desmond story, I was hyped for the setting, I was excited for the new gameplay stuff

Then what we got was a glitchy mess with a bad protagonist, the Desmond story devolved into terrible nonsense and the setting was pretty boring. Should have seen it coming really. The stuff that would have been cool to explore in the US wasn't built yet, whereas all the cool stuff in renaissance Italy was.

Haytham Kenway, some cool gameplay stuff, the ship battles and not being totally sick of the formula yet saved it from being an unparalleled disaster but it really wasn't good.

Watch_Dogs came immediately to mind. It was painfully mediocre and finishing it was a chore. I tried finishing a few of the side quests, but the payoffs weren't worth it. When Watch_Dogs 2 was announced, I actually felt a little sick over the memories of playing the first game.

There have been other disappointments, but this was the most painful.

Maybe I'm the only one here who played it, but man, I was so disappointed by Musashi Samurai Legend. I loved Brave Fencer Musashi, so I was excited when they announced we were getting a sequel several years later. The gameplay actually isn't that bad, but it's got some of the worst voice acting I've ever heard and it has none of the charm of the original. I'm usually pretty tolerant of bad voice acting, but I just couldn't keep listening to it after a while, especially the VA for Musashi, who was obviously a girl trying to sound like a boy.

Mario is Missing

I rented it without knowing it was an educational game. I thought it was going to be the game that was meant to tide players over until the next major Mario release. I thought it was going to be a quarter of the size of Super Mario World and feature Luigi as the only playable character. I remember thinking about what types of bosses the game might have. Then I got home, plugged it in, and was greeted to Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? with Mario characters. -_-

I'm rarely disappointed in games, but one of the most recent examples of disappointment I recall was from Steins;Gate 0. It wasn't bad, clearly. And it had some parts that were really enjoyable. I wouldn't turn down more scenes with a bunch of likable characters. One of the biggest issues I had was the failure to properly utilize Amadeus as an effective character. That bothered me a lot. I also thought the tone of the plot reminded me too much of their other works, Chaos;Head and Robotics;Notes. It's hard to capture why, exactly, but I don't like those at all, so Steins;Gate 0 suffered by the similarity.

Gunstar Heroes (GBA).

Heard such great things about the original Genesis game, and the GBA game turned out to be total crap.

There have been plenty of games that failed to live up to their lofty reputations for me--Chrono Trigger, Mega Man 2, maybe Xenoblade Chronicles--but CT and XBC weren't that bad and I didn't really expect much out of MM2 to begin with. GH was truly an awful game that I was told would be great.

Ah, yes, I forgot to mention ALttP and SMRPG. And SMG2, because good lord that was the worst.

Honestly, now I'm starting to wonder if I didn't overrate FFVI because by the time I played it, I'd already been disappointed by so many SNES games that everyone claimed were amazing that an actually good one seemed like the Holy Grail.

(I'm kidding, of course; FFVI is amazing. But yeah, I've probably been disappointed by more SNES games than I've actually enjoyed. Still need to try EB, though, and from what I know about it, I think I'd like that one.)

This one is weird to me: unless you were buying Gunstar Super Heroes at release, it was already common knowledge that it's not very good, especially compared to Gunstar Heroes, so Gunstar Heroes' reputation shouldn't have mattered.

to seriously answer the question, pokemon colosseum was definitely the most disappointing. no wild pokemon and battles were way too slow relative to game boy games. i'm still not sure a full fledged 3d game on console would work out great - there's something about the portability of the series that feels wrong to do without.

2nd place for me is jet force gemini, which i bought for like 10 bucks used after so much BOARD 8 HYPE back in like 2004. rare games always feel a little clunky, dated, and fetch questy to me, and this one was basically the worst of all of those worlds

a few years ago I wanted to play the Mario & Luigi games, as well as Super Paper Mario, so I decided to do a series playthrough and started from the top and replayed SMRPG and then Paper mario to get reacquainted with everything and work my way from there

when I got to TTYD, while I remember loving it when i played it ages ago, I think glitz pit just completely killed the momentum of the game and I didn't feel like continuing. Even Admiral Bobbery's badasssery couldn't keep me in.

I was actually hearbroken about that >_>

hmmm, thinking about it, perhaps I was burned out on playing 2 RPGs in a row before taking on a third, but still.

Yea I know but Suikoden 3 gets a lot more flak than it deserves. By no means would I put it anywhere near the level of 2, but I feel like a lot of the negativity it gets is just because it followed 2 and was so different and if it didn't bare the Suikoden name it wouldn't have been looked down on so much. Really that's where the huge disappointment for me came into play as I had recently come off playing Suikoden 1 and 2 for the first time and was expecting more of the same but potentially better and they were very different, so much so that I almost quit playing the game about an hour in.

Leonhart4 posted...

Funny you should ask about that as I actually just completed this game last night.

To be honest I thought the story was nothing but wasted potential but the actual gameplay was pretty fun. It is great to see the characters from their separate worlds interact with each other but it never amounts to what it could and should have. The plot does obviously put a huge emphasis on the paper aspect but it's really hard to explain what was so disappointing about it without you playing it yourself. So I guess as far as story goes, don't go into it with any expectations because it's a very simple and basic story.

Gameplay on the other hand was a lot of fun for me. I loved having 3 characters in battle and the fact that paper mario felt different from the others in the way he played. A lot of the actual mechanics in the battles themselves was pretty enjoyable to figure out/overcome. I also hear some people complain about the "quests" in this game but I actually enjoyed them and I won't spoil anything about it here. The only downside I saw to the gameplay was the Papercraft Battles which is this things "signature" new battle type much like how Dream Team had the giant Luigi. Personally, I didn't like the Papercraft Battles at all, but thankfully they don't take up a lot of time.

Overall, I wouldn't say it's the best of the Mario and Luigi series, but definitely not the worst either. I'd give it a shot. If you can just get past the story itself not ever coming close to what it should have been I think you'll enjoy it.
