That's what comedians do when they get mad at hecklers. They make insult jokes at them. He was pissed but thought people would find the intensity of the insult funny. Shock humor is a thing, you know.

Did he actually say a joke though? I'm hazy on exactly what he said since it's been so long but I remember thinking it just sounded horrible and not even an attempt at a joke, just saying "in a different time you'd be strung up!" or something.

That's not really a joke. It's closer to a threat than a joke if anything.

Yeah no, I wouldn't call Michael Richards a racist, but that was far from a "joke". He mostly just said that because he was pissed off at the heckler and wanted to say something back, something that many comedians tend to use as a self defense mechanism.

Guys, you look at any hecklers in comedy shows like Jimmy Carr and Louis C.K. and when they get heckled, the comedians just flat out insult the hecklers. But they do it for the purpose of shutting the heckler down and getting some laughs. Does he really think that the black man should be strung up and killed? Of course not. So it wasn't serious. So it was a joke. A joke meant to insult and berate, but it was a joke.

Go ahead and call it a joke. Guys like CK are a little more thought out, able to keep their composure and can put the heckler down without resorting to that shit. Richards got frustrated and that was the first place his mind went. so sure, it was a joke I guess, but it's still kind of odd that the first thing he could think of was "call him a ****** and remind them of lynchings".

An angry insult is not a joke.

A joke is not just a mean thing said you don't want to experience the consequences for saying.


I'm not even saying him shouting that nonsense makes him racist. He could have just tried to say the most starkly grim angry mean-spirited thing he could think of to try and intimidate the heckler, but to call that a "joke" is an insult to jokes.

There's an entire criteria of jokes literally about insulting people. He tried to do that, but he failed because it just came across as a racist rant. It had no real thought process - just angry yelling.

... but seriously even before it was revealed Michael Richards was an insane racist, the character of Kramer was always the dumbest and most out-of-place aspect of Seinfeld. He's basically a traditional sitcom character, the wacky next door neighbor. I guess they thought they needed that on a show that otherwise challenged many sitcom conventions, as an anchor for stupid viewers.

The only people that hate JonTron for his "racist" comments were the people who already hated JonTron from what I've seen.

I don't hate JonTron, I have high praise for his talents as a YouTube content creator. I think he's the best I've seen in this space of "make fun of old stupid shit" and adds to the content he rips on, while having an interesting and engaging comedic style that I haven't seen anywhere else. But as a human being outside of his craft, he's pretty shitty.

It's about structure but it's also about intent. The words were not said to be taken seriously. That's at the heart of what a joke is. If the comedian says the words anyway with the full intent of making fun of the person and getting laughs, it's a joke regardless of structure.

I really don't have a huge personal view on Jon one way or the other. I find him usually entertaining, and if he keeps whatever dumb views in his personal life he may have out of his entertainment, then I don't really care a ton.

And in all seriousness, I am honestly more offended by him arguing Wolf was a clone of Fox. The racial crap he said was just him parroting dumb talking points, which is, you know, whatever. But that business about Wolf, that was all him, homegrown utter stupidity. >_>

My first experience with JonTron was watching him play Guts on SNES on GameGrumps. He knew the controls but Arin didn't and he refused to tell Arin how to play because according to him it wouldn't be fair and it would give Arin an advantage. I just remember thinking that doesn't make sense and thinking he was a jerk >_>. He never really redeemed himself for me.

That's the worst first impression possible. Way worse than any political stuff he's talked about. He was such a dick that episode. lol

There was a lot of other stuff that Jon was petty about. I remember his discussion of Wolf being a clone during the Smash video. Overall I think Jon was more interesting on the show than the dude they got to replace him, because there was more tension. It's probably funnier with the other guy though.

It is. With Jon it really just seemed to be a lot of arguing coupled with Jon's screeching and drunk rambles. Now it's just two friends who like to play games and often devolves into interesting stories between the two of them. Much more calming and more of a podcast of sorts.

I liked Jontron in the gamegrumps playthrough of sonic 06. Imo that was way better than any of the videos with Dan

There's no way to know intent for certain, and of course Kramer is going to mark the intent as "a joke" - there is too much financially on the line for him to say anything else. So if you look at the structure of it, there is no context clue or anything to suggest he's kidding. It is genuine rage not only against the hecklers but all blacks.

In the Laugh Factory incident, the greatest piece of evidence that it was a joke is the fact that he said it in the middle of a stand up routine - the context for where such a joke would be made. Second, comedians usually insult hecklers to get laughs. Third, he has no prior public history of racism. Fourth, close friends vouched for him instead of distancing themselves. Fifth, he apologized right after (unlike Jontron).

Intent is not as clear cut as we want it to be, but it's what separates something meant to be taken seriously (not a joke) from something that is not meant to be taken seriously (a joke).

There's certainly more evidence than usual to make an educated guess on what his intent is, but that's not always the case, and it's pretty easy for any asshole to just claim "I intended it to be a joke!" to try and shrug off accountability.

And I'd really rather not hold a court case's worth of scrutiny and arguments every time someone does that. >_>

And that's the argument. Comedians get in trouble for offensive shit that they say all the time. I'll make no defense for Richards and his comments, but he did the right thing and apologized right after. Be it morality or socialization, he knew what he did was wrong and made an effort to remedy his damage. So even if he did mean it from the "deep place" in his mind, he learned his lesson by being dragged through the court of public opinion.

I get what you are saying, but I include humor as an element of creativity. I actually hate it when RLM attempts to overproduce, such as having Jay marry Plinkett, just stick with the reviewing and adlibbing. I've never once even chuckled at anything JonTron has said or done.
