I am a commuter. This means that I will be having to find parking spaces at my college.

Finding parking spaces close to the bulk of the university is not an easy feat.

I just went for honors college orientation today, then decided "hey, it would probably be smart if I went and found where my classes are because classes start tomorrow and I don't really know where all of them are yet!" My feet now hate me for that decision.

But then I realized that, today, I got a good parking spot because classes haven't really started yet. Tomorrow, I am so so fucked. Gonna have to park far away from my class buildings and just tough it out. My first class is at 9:30 some days and 10:00 on others so there's no real way that there's going to be a lot of parking spaces left close to my classes. I figure most of them will be taken by 8.

Fuck.

(I am enjoying the campus itself though, and most of the people that I've met have been good people. Also my professors are mostly rated well on ratemyprofessors so wooooooooo)

It'll hurt at first, but you should be able to get used to it soon. And yeah, it was better that you went and found your classes, as it's worse when you're wandering around aimlessly. At least with class you will have the ability to sit down when you reach the classroom.

you'll get used to it. Buy better shoes. Get to class earlier if you're having trouble finding a spot. If your feet hurt really bad, you might need a custom shoe insert from a podiatrist and/or do foot stretches. Good luck!

there are shuttles, I think, but as far as I know they're not as good as they should be

Besides, I was exaggerating a bit. The walk won't be THAT bad. Doing it every day from my car to the classes, then from class to class, and back to the car... it still won't be fun, but it's not as bad as today was. My feet just hurt really bad because I walked all around the campus today. I won't have to do "all around the campus" in a single day again. But it'll still suck for the next couple days because my feet are in pain now.

The walk could easily be more than 10 minutes from the parking lots that always have a spot open to the rest of the university. Then add a few to get to the actual building.

It doesn't sound that bad, but for right now, I'm doing that walk in Texas Summer heat with hurting feet. Not looking forward to it.

It won't be that bad at all once the temperatures go below 70 degrees. That's not for a couple months though probably

Where did you go? I'm at Arlington.

I'm really thankful that all of my classes are on the same side of campus except for one, but they're still pretty isolated from the lots that have any available parking spaces most of the time.

I split time between UNT and UT Dallas. Both schools put me in housing that was a solid 10 minute walk from at least a few of my classes until I was in grad school <_<

The only really obnoxious time was 2011 though. Because holy shit that summer was so bad. Other than that, I got used to the walking within a couple months tops because I was literally walking everywhere (Granted, it'll probably take you longer if you're commuting, but you should experience the same thing and quit being bothered by it probably by the end of the calendar year)

Good suggestion. I usually wouldn't think to do that because it never looks good on me but if I keep my hair shorter it'll probably be alright. As it is right now, wearing a cap just screws up my hair and doesn't even look good in the first place.

I've thought about using an umbrella to shield the sun but... idk, that seems a bit weird and then I'd have to keep up with my umbrella everywhere. Probably not a good idea.

I think there's no rule against it but I don't know how to skateboard and I'm not willing to learn. My perception of how people look on a skateboard is skewed negative because all the gigantic douchebag guys at my high school would ride skateboards lmfao

They're certainly practical but I just can't do that.

20-30 minutes by car on the highway, assuming decent traffic conditions. Biking there is certainly not an option, and I don't have any way to get a bike to the campus to help me go from place to place. My car is too small to keep it in the car anywhere, and I don't have a rack for one.

Alternatively

Get up super early so you get a space and have breakfast in the building. Get a coffee. And study!

This is in a super ideal world where you're the best student ever though. I certainly would never do that, unless I stayed up until 7am and then decided "Ah fuck it I might as well just go in now"

Definitely get a rack for a bike, then you can find an easy parking spot 2x far away and still speed to class

Also if you have a 4 door car it will fit a bike if you remove the front wheel

Like I said, doesn't sound too bad at first and it wouldn't be if you weren't carrying anything, the weather was nice, etc.

Doing the walk today, it's a little closer to 13-14 minutes. The walk is worse with a backpack full of stuff and Texas mugginess/heat.

Again, I'll get used to it but for right now it sucks lmao.

My junior year of college I walked over 30 minutes to get to class. And my wife currently walks over 20 minutes during her commute which involves muggy D.C. swamp air.

So no, I think having to walk 10-15 minutes in the heat with a backpack is super "whatever." That's not even a mile. The morning heat will be gone in a month or two anyway.

Buck up

Yeah it took me about 25 minutes every morning to walk 1.5 miles to class with a backpack up and down a few hills. Then I would have to walk everywhere on campus all day, to get food in town and back to the apartment. Sometimes I would take the trek twice due to class scheduling. In the freezing cold half of the time. A 5 mile day was a good day and I didn't have a step counter but I am sure I hit 10 miles often.

When I was at another campus the parking lot was at the bottom of a huge hill, it took about 10 minutes to scale the thing then you had to go up 2 flights of steps at the top. In a muggy humid environment. This was not as fun, but I do miss all of the walking and put on weight after I graduated.

Do Epsom salt soaks when you're at home for your feet. Hot water and Epsom salts. It will really help with the soreness. Make sure you have good shoes, and the bike idea is a great one! I have to walk a lot too, and good shoes make a big difference.

I'm thinking the shoes suggestions are really good suggestions so I'm probably gonna go shopping for some shoes pretty soon. I wear Vans, and they're kinda stylish and definitely the shoes I like to wear in most situations, but they just won't cut it for walking around a college campus all day.

On that note, I found a blister on my right foot, right under my big toe! Woooooooo
