I don't have a problem with archaic JRPG battle systems anyway. Future Tales games might do it better, but I'd probably still have fun with Symphonia even after playing the newer ones. I don't have a problem playing older FF games even though the newer ones have improved the battle system in ways I prefer.

RE4 is survival horror. Third Person Shooter doesn't really fit there....though you are shooting in third person.

I do think it being active combat is a factor here. There are no camera or control options in FF6.

Music: Symphonia > Graces f > whatever

Symphonia's combat is still a lot of fun, and really it's biggest flaw at this point is that it's difficult to play a 60 FPS version of it. Abyss is the only one I flat-out didn't enjoy.

Yeah RE4 is 100% a third person shooter. But the gameplay is also built around it not having cover. I mean lets say the gameplay was similar to Mass Effect or something it would suck. I mean I'm pretty sure the first two dead space games didn't have cover either.

Anyway yeah I tend to agree that it's basically just FPSes that "hasn't aged well" really applies to, because of, ironically, FPS. It's no coincidence that Goldeneye is pretty much the only game I say this about with any regularity. Pretty sure it applies to a lot of FPSes from back then but that's the only one I played a lot of. Well aside from Doom-- I think Doom still holds up though because all the animations and mechanics and stuff are designed with clunkiness in mind.

Fighters of yore that were bad... they kinda were just bad. I mean Street Fighter 2 holds up magnificently to this day, and it was the king back then too. I guess you could say people were kinda more kind in how they perceived fighters because there were less good ones out there, but yeah.

I think there are a ton of people who are still active in the fighting game community who'd disagree with you there. Hell I'm pretty sure Street Fighter 2 Turbo has a more active tournament scene than Alpha 3 at this point. And I bet it'll have a more active tournament scene than SFV by the time SFVII comes out.

I mean if you take a 3d fighter though. Like Four standouts come to mind. Soul Calibur (and 2), Virtual Fighter 4 Evo, Tekken 3, and Dead or Alive 3 are such standouts in their genre style that it's been hard to drastically improve on them imo. In fact I think every Soul Calibur game after 2 has been a step down from the original.

I actually love Alpha 3, mostly because it has by far the most entertaining Story Mode of any SF game to me, but at a high level I'm pretty sure there's a lot wrong with it. I think V-Ism introduces a lot of problems with a lot of characters at minimum.

This is sort of just vague memory of asking Sytha about it though-- I never really followed it closely or anything. I do think the gameplay has to be at fault more than accessibility or whatever else you're attributing it to. I mean SF3 was less accessible than a lot of fighters for a really long time but it was also one of the most popular, because the gameplay was just that good.

Berseria is easily my favorite overall.

My favorite battle system in the series is actually still Symphonia's, but that's mostly because it's the only one I took the time to really get good at. I did a low-level run of it at some point, that finished the game with an average party level of something like 9-10.

Hearts R was a reaaaaally nice breather game after Xillia 2's craziness. X2 is all about setting up insane combos and knowing all the properties of your absurd line-up of artes, while Hearts you can pretty much just free-form whatever you want and it'll work. The incredibly straightforward leveling system was a nice break from the Allium Orb, too.

Yeah, Hearts R has a lot of things that I really like in it, it's just dragged down by having potentially the most forgettable cast in the series. Not bad, necessarily, but definitely forgettable.

No, I meant to say that games like Tales of Vesperia are among my most HYPED games as a player that has never had the chance to experience the series, therefore the analogy of Carl's Jr. being the dream of a fat kid that has never been there.

Probably unlikely and if it somehow did it would have an entirely different dub I think so it wouldn't be nearly as good. On the "plus" side an Xbox 360 and the game should be really cheap by now I would imagine or maybe it'll be on Steam if it isn't already I dunno

after playing through it once on a 360 that wasn't mine and knowing that i would probably never get to play it again, i ended up importing the JP version that has remained untouched since then.

I don't really want to buy a 360 just to play one game. It's literally the only Xbox 360 exclusive game I've ever wanted to play once Mass Effect got ported to PS3.

I don't blame you. I bought my 360 for it and Left 4 Dead. They're basically the only two things I ever really played on it and I got it at full price. No regrets since I got a ton of hours between those two games. I would love for it to be ported or remastered or whatever as long as it kept the same dub voice cast. I mean they could get away with replacing Baker with Mercer, but none of the others.

Gal, ines and KOR METEOR never get any better, but the rest of the cast has its moments and is for the most part enjoyable
