Im torn here because i think this season has been way too on the nose in its attempts to deal with 'serious' subject matter and yet at the same time i am CRINGING at all the man children blaming 'sjws' for it.

Apparently, Rick and Morty is back and better than ever! Largely due to the four new female writers they added to the team, for some reason.

Well, if season 3 is suddenly weaker than the two previous, that's a funny coincidence.

For the record, I think Season 3 has been okay so far.

I think the bigger issue is the creator's divorce. He sort exercises the majority of creative control over the product. It's weird that you instantly jump to the conclusion that it's the women working for him and not the man in charge.

The gazorpazorp episode did rip on women a good bit, wouldn't be surprised if that was at the top of many fans' list.

For me, I look at it as the first two seasons they were in the world-building phase. They did a great job of it. Now that the world is set up, I think they're having trouble, or maybe just being lazy, with using the established world to tell stories.

Like, they've been so over the top with gore and nihilism this season thus far, seems like they've embraced that identity and went on auto-pilot. Harmon's divorce and the divorce of Beth and Jerry and the effects on the family seem to be the focal point of episodes 2+3. And then this episode was just "superhero movies are dumb and this is why. Let's throw in some gore and some drunk Rick and some cynical Morty and you've got an episode".

There's really no new concepts they've played around with, other than S3 E1 with the brainalyzer and taking down the council and the galactic government, and even that was set up by the previous season. The love just doesn't feel like it's there anymore.

Thing is, they're upping the gore and nihilism presumably in order to completely 'deconstruct' rick at some point in the future rather than just for thr sake of it...and the contrived way theyve gone about it has made it a lot worse than just throwing together zany ideas imo

Im reserving judgment until the season is finished. But the thing is no matter how you spin it, previous seasons had their subtleties. Like trying to guess whether Rick cares or wants to care but doesn't have the capacity to. Morty's ignorance slowly evolving into understanding and thus nihilism (like this episode). It was the character development that made the show. There really hasn't been any development thus far. The characters have been pretty static since S3 E1, and any changes in attitude the characters may have the series seems to say "it's cause of the divorce". It's not because of some crazy adventure that went wrong, it's just the divorce. And then they throw some gore and crazy gadgets on top of it to gloss it all up. It just doesn't feel the same.

Granted Harmon did say E4 was a weak episode long before it was ever released and said the next two episodes were top notch. So I'm reserving full judgment for now. But so far aside from E1 which was a continuation from the previous season it hasn't really struck much of a chord with me.

There's two correlations going on here so you also can't say the bigger problem is the divorce. You don't know that. They could be both equal factors as to why quality dropped. I agree we can't blame solely one or the other but at the same time we can't dismiss one or the other as a lesser factor yet.

They beat up an asshole in a montage of beating up assholes.

The show isn't post modernist, it's nihilistic. It's not SJW but it absolutely doesn't give a fuck about identify.

I've enjoyed the season so far, with the only weak episode being S3E2 (only because S3E1 was so good it was tough to follow). My only criticism is that Rick's character development seems to be ignored for his zany "give no fucks" attitude and seeing him do things without consequence and no hints that he actually cares deep down isn't quite as engaging.

Why do political ideologies feel the need to claim TV shows as being on their side? Do you remember Raising Gazorpazorp? Lot of stereotypes about women and kind of clowning how a society of women would be like.

Besides, all these redneck conservatives people make fun of for being uber patriotic and loving the war aspect of America are the ones that get a boner over America being supreme in WWII. It's not like being conservative means you're more aligned with Nazi views, if anything the ones that are supremely anti-nazi and celebrate it the most probably also hail from the right because America beat their asses.

Despite the goofiness, the episode made the woman's world a paradise. It wasn't exactly critical. They lived in advanced space crystal spires and wore togas and hadn't executed anyone in an inordinate amount of time.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but the few cracks they made about women was sort of overwhelmed by the fact that woman world was paradise while man world was the thunderdome.

That same stereotype also tends to exaggerate Hitler's skills and still blame Jews or other minorities for all sorts of social ills. They aren't really as much anti-Nazi as they are pro-America.

This season has been entertaining in its own right. The Vindicators episode was great.

I get what people mean about it feeling different, maybe losing its spark somewhere in its popularity, but it's still a fun show.

I think people are just expecting too much from it. It really doesn't seem any worse than the previous seasons to me, I think expectations were just a bit too high.

For what it's worth, the same thing happened between S1 and S2. I saw a lot of hate for every episode in S2 as they aired, but then people loved it in retrospect.

I think that the season has been fine though. The Vindicators episode was probably my least favorite of the season thus far because I felt like the last half was a bit too straightforward (It was really obvious that we'd lose one in each room after the first so that dragged on for me), but even then, it had some funny jokes and I enjoyed it overall.
