Do you usually tip on takeout/to-go orders (assuming a regular order with no special instructions)?

Additionally, if you do tip, do you usually tip as much as you would if you were dining in, or less? I usually tip but it's around half as much as if I were dining in. Not really sure what the contemporary etiquette is for this.

Yep, but not as much as a dine-in order unless it's something that required extra work (like a Japanese place packing a bento box to go).

It's weird because I usually feel obligated to even though I would obviously never tip at McDonald's or something. But for some reason if I'm picking up food from like, Chilis, I feel like a total douche writing a 0 in the tip portion of the receipt.

Never

The tip is for the additional service the waitstaff provide. The meal preparation is already covered in the menu price.

No. The cost of preparing the food is already in the price. You only tip for additional waitstaff service, or delivery.

At my chinese place I tip a couple bucks because they're really good at having everything prepared and they've never gotten even a large, complicated order wrong

This is kinda what made me think of this topic lol. There's a Chinese place near my house that always gets my takeout orders ready in five minutes. I live no more than half a mile away, and I've never had to wait on an order even when immediately driving there after calling them. Figure that place deserves an extra buck.

they can if you don't catch it in your credit card statement. which requires you to check and remember you spent $17 and not $27 at chili's three weeks ago. and unless you kept your copy of receipt it seems like they would have upper hand

I'm pretty good at checking my spending habits but I wouldn't have any guilty conscience about putting a big X or drawing a line through the tip portion from now on.

I rarely eat take-out in the first place anyway.

I tip sometimes, usually if I'm paying cash (my usual takeout diner has a tip jar). Maybe about 25% of the time.

Never more than a dollar and whatever coins though.

I never add a tip to a card charge on a takeout.

I tip, but not as much as if I were dining in. I figure that waitresses are taking time away from their dine-in customers who generally tip more, so I toss in a buck or two to make up for that.

I would if I ever ordered delivery

but aside from pizza (Where I only do carry-out) and very rarely fast food, I literally never go to any restaurant without planning on sitting down and eating there

I wouldn't tip if I got takeout from a sit-down type place though, for the same reason as everybody else that said no.

Usually a buck or two. It has the extra benefit of having them remember you if it's a place you go regularly.

Also, when I don't tip on my card, I either draw a line through it or write Cash (the latter is usually how I'll tip pizza delivery when I can). I'm not saying it's likely, but 0.00 can so easily become 10.00 if they want to be super scummy.

Rarely. If I know people working there or if I'm asking for favors (extra peppers with the pizza, etc.), I'm more likely, but otherwise businesses are taking advantage of how much and how often we as consumers are supposed to tip.

And draw a line through the tip section folks, unless you're afraid that'll be turned into a really awkward 4

Something like this. I actually work in the restaurant industry. When I order from where I'm employed I almost always tip because these are my coworkers and it's hard to stare them in the face the next day if I walk out the bar after giving them goose egg for taking my order.

Other places though? I only tip if I ask them go an extra mile and they execute flawlessly, or make up for any errors by rectifying them and having a great attitude. Tips aren't owed, they're earned.

Also always draw a diagonal line spanning the entire length of the gratuity section if you don't plan on tipping, people. It's exceedingly difficult to corrupt that into a number. If you want to be even safer on the line below where it says the total write in exactly what the bill total is. No credit card fraud possibilities ever.

If I call in an order to a diner, the waitress still has to tend to my food, bag it up, etc. She still has to tip out to the chef that prepared the food. I toss her 2 bucks for the trouble.

Does not get a usual 20% tip.
