in the books it directly is referenced by tyrion as he strangles shae.

I know, but obviously in this universe it doesn't reference that. I don't think they would put it in randomly if it wasn't to make a point. Could've made a "Dornishman's Wife" reference then.

i do think that's likely. in the map floor, someone noted that jaime stands on the fingers while cersei stands on the neck. too much coincidence.

and in fairness, dornishman's wife has already been sung!

Since this topic is slow outside of Sunday nights through, like, Tuesday mornings, I figured I'd copy over one of my posts in NeoGAF's Thrones topic. We we're discussing what might happen with Sam for the rest of the season.

Even if the wildest unconfirmed runtime hypotheses for Season 8 hold true (namely, HBO Programming Chief Casey Bloys saying "it hasn't been decided how long each episode will be, but feature-length isn't impossible" or whatever) we still don't have a lot of time left on the clock. Sam and Gilly are with Jorah now, but they're all hundreds of leagues away from the real action. I imagine the writers will want to bring them to either Dragonstone or Winterfell before the end of the current, penultimate season.

Doing so means truncating Sam's Citadel plot, which is perfectly fine. It means less richness than in the books, but a far more direct route to wherever he's going with this. It could even be possible -- very possible -- that he's already done everything he was meant to do here. He's (ostensibly) cured Jorah and he's sent word to Jon that Dragonstone needs to be mined, which has bolstered Jon's thinking and pushed him to meet Daenerys. These are both big things. Maybe he gets kicked out in 7x03 for all we know. Some fans would be disappointed, some would undoubtedly call it a worthless plot, but me, I'd be fine.

That said, I suspect there will be at least one more event before he leaves. Not sure what it will be, though.

the knowledge part of the citadel has been an absolute fucking joke so far. we need either a discovery, or sam to get greyscale, for the citadel to pay off.

OTOH, we haven't wasted much screen time here, which is nice, so even if it doesn't pay off i'm fine.

I basically don't give a shit what the show does with the citadel, because it's already obvious they aren't going to do anything remotely similar to the books. which is fine, I guess. I mean we reached the point several seasons ago where I basically decided to just consider everything the show does non-canon; this is the main reason I'm able to keep watching because I know even if something happens it's not a spoiler per se. the show runners have proven they're willing to fundamentally and completely change entire plot threads which means anything can happen on the show regardless of what GRRMs outline says.

Why would Sam go to Dragonstone? What purpose does that serve? I can maybe see it happening if they kick him out but otherwise, he's training to become a maester for the Wall. There's nothing for him in either Dragonstone or Winterfell. If he gets kicked maybe Jorah needs extra attention or he goes to figure out how Dany cannot be hurt by fire or something but other than that...Sam's only scene last season was him arriving at Oldtown wasn't it? (and a couple of scenes with dad). Maybe they'll just leave him in Oldtown for the rest of the show.

Randall Tarly will backstab Cersei and steal the throne (this is after Dany fails spectacularly against the White Walkers and dies), only him and Dickon will die and they'll turn to Sam to be king, but he'll turn down the throne in the same way Maester Aemon did.

He serves little plot relevance. Ever since returning from the Wall, his scenes have basically been doting on his baby and Gilly or the journey to Oldtown. I can see no purpose for him anywhere else in Westeros that would be greater than studying how to become a maester of the Night's Watch.

I like how he's been four slightly different people for the different environments he finds himself in

Plus just straight-up cool. Walks into the throne room dressed like he fell head over heels through a hot topic and doesn't give a shit and rides his ship onto another ship to murder everything

Awesome

That's what I don't like tbqh he's super like cartoony. Combining Victarian and Euron seems like a mistake to begin with though. You can't effectively combine brutish dumbass soldier with intelligent charismatic sociopath pirate. It doesn't really work.

i was a giant euron hater in S6 after the kingsmoot, but everything he's done in S7 has resonated with me. it might not resonate with you, but it's shocking that you don't get why he's so beloved! just like most of us here aren't thrilled with dany, but her appeal is obvious - she's a hot dragon princess who kicks a lot of ass and stands up to men

That infographic from the last topic point out that Sam is the most consistent character in the show. Every season, he has had plenty of scenes that usually match each other for worth based on where they are in the season.

I'm a little mad that the Grey Worm/Missandei scene was five times longer than it needed to be.

I don't think Grey Worm/Missandei was five times longer than it needed to be when it needed to be nothing at all. They're both extremely attractive, though, even for TV.

Though I heard that there was a scene with Ghost - already produced - that they cut in post-production.

It was propaganda to make sure you keep supporting team Dany. Sure whatever, show them confess, don't give me two minutes of her dragging it out of him, two minutes of kissing and disrobing, then the move to the bed. Hell, save that cunnilingus for the boat scene.

Euron is alright. He's just a villain though, which is pretty lame for a character in the show. The only reason Cersei hasn't completely dropped into that hole is because of Jaime and the amount of time they've invested in her. Hopefully Euron doesn't stick around as long as Ramsey though.

euron literally cannot stick around as long as ramsay. ramsay was around from about 3x03 to 6x09 and was a very consistent presence. euron was barely in S6 and will only be in 13 episodes between S7/8 even if he makes it to the end.

Yeah Euron feels a lot like Ramsay so far. Too villainous and over the top. But most importantly, he came totally out of nowhere. There's no build up at all to make you believe him.

His interaction with Cersei is definitely the best part so far, and gives him potential. But the rest of him feels forced.

But mostly I'm with Maria here. Euron is fun. And he does it without being unfun like Ramsay with Theon and Sansa.
